"Exhaust emission values" light came on

Okay, so my 08 clubman which I purchased 6 weeks ago, now has the check engine light on. The manual translates the light to "exhaust emission values". Anyone know what I should expect to hear from the dealer?

It could be a bad O2 sensor or a vacuum leak. Sometimes that can happen if you start the car to move it a short distance, then shut it off, fuel condenses on the O2 sensor and it turns the light on. Take it to an autoparts store and have them put their code reader on it and clear the code, see if it comes back.

Not all code readers will read MINI/BMW codes. If you work on your car at all you should get a good OBD2 code reader.

It sat in my garage for 3 days, started it up this morning, the light was on. I think Mini Cooper extended the warranties for the O2 sensor for 120k miles if I remember correctly? Taking it in to bmw tomorrow to have it checked out. No mini dealer here in southern Oregon.

After reading my manual further, they said the most common problem to get this warning light is a loose gas cap, sure enough that was it. Light is off, problem solved.

That's great!

I just wish all our problems were that easy to fix.
