Hot Hood ( ok Bonnet )

Why did they stop putting the heat shields on hoods ? My sons 08 cooper S
has heat shields above turbo, my new clubman does not and temps are like
180F after sitting a while with no air blowing through scoop. That is just insane. I never owned a vehicle that had such heat on the hood .

Love the car but the heat damaged a stripe I had installed on the bonnet, I dried the car and it scratched the vinyl that was so soft. With a soft towel.
And how does the paint hold up to that ?

yeah, the heat is insane. My only guess about the discontinuation of the heat shield is cost....it saves a few cents (pents) which adds up to a larger number....yeah, not worth it in my opinon, but then again I'm not Mr. CEO MINI

I think I am going to buy some heat shield and install myself.

Do some research on heat shields and turbo wraps on NAM. I am also thinking about some sort of shielding and found the threads on NAM to be very enlightening. I still have not decided what to do. The turbo wrap seems the best route, but I have concerns about heat damage to the hotside of the turbo itself and possible warranty issues if there is an engine problem.

I use the NM heat shield on my GP and recommend it the highest, plus it's more affordable than others.

Way, during that dyno time at MM9, the guys operating it said to remove heat shields for the dyno runs and somebody here recently posted a picture of a melted valve cover that they claimed was due to the heat being retained by the heat shield. Care to "Way" in on that?

The melted valve cover was confirmed to be due to incorrect installation.

Regardless there should not be that kind of heat , PERIOD. I plan to put some
adhesive backed heat shield directly above turbo area in hopes it stops melting my stripes.

I currently have a loaner car while the dealership replaces my melted stripes and a few other items I found the first week of owning, and the loaner is
a 2013 paceman S and it's hood does not get near as hot but it has alot more air space dissapate the heat.

I think it's a case of 10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound bag , all generating heat.

Heat is a killer of many components and wonder how much longer the car would last if they found a better solution besides popping the hood everytime you stop.

I've got a 2013 Cooper S and I seem to have the same issue. Following a short drive, the amount of heat just above the scoop is insane. I guess this issue isn't specific to the 07/08 model years.

my sons 08 has a heat shield on his. I guess they figured holes in the scoop would fix it but it does NO good when STOPPED and no air flow from fan.

I have been using the NM heatshield on my 09 for over a year now and no issues. I have one on my wife's 2010 as well.

do you or anyone with a NM have a infrared temp gauge to measure what it is on the bonnet by scoop ?

I read 165F after sitting for 5 minutes and it's only 80f outside , next summer when it hit 100+ I fear it will be beyond insane, like I will post a youtube video cooking an egg

Can you tell much of a difference in heat? Right now I can't even put my hand on the hood after driving sometime. Can you at least put your hand on the hood without 3rd degree burns after driving?

some guy some day at jiffy lube is gonna get burned and sue MINI , my dealer acts like it's normal, sorry I never had a car that was so hot except under the hood , never on the outside . I don't see how they have gotten away with it so far since the temp is hot enough to cause burns. I just don't get it.

random question. do you also use the oil line heat shield, or is that not as big of an issue with the heat? I know thats why some go with a wrap to keep the heat contained

funny , I got my car in the shop and emailed manager there about adding heat shield and
his reply was " I never heard of this problem " , I told him to google it and then drive a cooper 10 miles, stop and wait 5 mins then lay your hand on hood by scoop.

Said he would look into it. I also sent him the MINI part number for the problem he does not admit to knowing about. I'm having a hard time enjoying my new car when the dealership acts like this. I know he's just doing what he was told to say about it.

Dealer Sales manager just called, he looked up the part number I gave him for heat shield, he is installing for free. Can you say silent recall ? Either way glad they are taking care of me.

Now my stained headliner appears to have come from above and they said would take a month to get a new one. Asked if he could pull one from a new car on lot, saying it would not be NEW but previously installed, I said no problem, just figure out what leaked though , maybe some sealant ? The stain is rust brown but I never felt any moisture.

Gald to hear you are being taken care of by your dealer. Please report back on how well the shield works. I'm curious.

until recently Moritz MINI / BMW was family owned, they just got sold though but they say will stay the same. For the warranty period , including 3yr maint period when I need maint I call and give 3 days notice, they drive to my home or work and leave me the loaner and go do service etc and bring back when it's done. Pretty nice. Even oil changes etc.

This is my fist MINI and I think they don't want it to be my last. Wife already wants to trade in the Miata for
convertible MINI.
