R55 Oh yuck
I went away for a weekend last fall & left my '08 Cooper parked in my driveway under a nice shady butternut tree.
While I was away, a bunch of squirrels (aka "tree rats") discovered the tasty butternuts in the tree. They spent the weekend chewing the dark and gooey husks from the nuts and dropping them on my car roof and hood.
When I returned and saw the mess, I washed the crud off (after a few @#$% words directed at squirrels). Dark stains remained on my formerly pristine white roof, resisting all attempts to remove them.
Long story short? $200 for a body shop to compound and buff the paint. Looks as good as new now.
@#$%&* tree rats.

I just happen to cross this thread and thought I would let you in on a little tip I found on the internet last year when my car was 2 days old.... My hubby took the car to show off and parked it under a tree, when I inspected it later i found sap spots.
searched on the internet and was surprised it said to use bacon grease. Heat in the microwave and drip small droips of the warm fat on the sap, wipe quickly, takes it right off without smudging. Wow was I amazed.
Hope this helps.

50/50 solution of Simple Green and water will dissolve all tree sap and bug guts I have come across. I always spray nose, windshield, rearview mirror covers and wheels with solution and let sit for 5 min, then rinse car. Sap and guts come right off, ALL of the brake dust comes off. Then I start to hand wash it.
