Should Park light stay illuminated?

Just got home with my new Clubman! Woohoo!

I keep going out to check things and am wondering about the P light next to the shifter for having the auto trans in park.

After turning off the car, it is still illuminated as long as 90 minutes after turning off the car (I haven't left it alone longer than that! ) so don't know when or if it will ever turn off. Is this okay?

'08 Laser Blue/Silver Clubman S etc etc

In most other cars it will stay on permanently; I don't think it would be any different in a MINI.

Thanks Proximal!
I've owned many a GM, Chevrolet, Ford and one BMW but have never had a car where the shift indicator glowed 24/7. Wouldn't it affect the battery at some point?

Same for a 2008 Cooper

We've noticed the same thing in our 2008 MC.
The light does seem to go out after a period of time. Generally overnight.

That means your battery is OUT!!

The Auto-Headlights keep the parking lights on for a limited time. Say about 40 seconds, depending on how you set the timer on your key fob. But when you set the dial to just parking lights, then they stay on forever until your battery is drained. I had mine drained not knowing that I had my parking lights on. So I had to boost my car up after owning it for only three months. LOL.

Sorry. Not the Parking lights, but the Park Indicator Light.

I just checked and it's off after less than 2 hours.

the original poster isn't talking about parking lights. they're talking about the little illuminated "P" indicator next to the gear shifter.

i noticed the same thing on my car.. i can't imagine it being a huge drain or an issue that it stays illuminated, but am curious as to WHY it stays illuminated. Doesn't make any sense to me!!

The illuminated "p". After turning off the car is normal. It will go out after a certain amount of time. This is an indication mostly to techs that the cars electronics have not fully gone into sleep mode. When you turn the car off the various control units power down in a specific order and not all at once. Think like a PC. It's bad to CTL-ALT-DEL and start up in safe mode. There are a mired of things that still happen after you turn off the car. Btw if you disturb the car like opening the door to see why the p is on you start the sequence all over again.

Congrats to the OP on the new car Motor on

On a different topic when referring to parking lights. The Park lights "P" are a standard function in Europe, when parking on a very dark road you can illuminate the park light on the side of the car that is on the street. This allows oncoming cars to see the part of your vehicle in the road. To turn activate the Parking lights, turn off the car(key still in the ignition) and hold the turn signal down for the left side or up for the right side.
