Safe return from Engine Light

About 10 days ago my Mini was taken to MiniER, with a critical case of "Engine Light" syndrome. After being carried away on the transport (Miniambulance) to the Mini Hospital, he sat at the Mini Hospital for 18 hours before being seen! He (the Mini - Boy Blue) was pretty worried about his condition. The Mini ER triaged Boy Blue and could find nothing wrong. The told him to forget about it and take two gallons of petrol to ease the discomfort. However, as the Triage was finishing the condition reappeared, "Engine Light", Boy Blue was immediately taken into the ER and extensive diaognosis insued. Boy Blue saw several administrators and several TechDoctors while in the ER. There was a specialist called in remotely from the Parent Hospital in BMW. A heroic and clinically compitent TechDoctor would not allow the specialist to continue the treatment plan which was to wipe Boy Blues memories of the event and send him home.
After spending the weekend in the Mini ICU, the TechDoctor conducted more tests, and discovered that Boy Blue's Liver (High Pressure Fuel Pump) was not operating correctly, and ordered an immediate transplant. Boy Blues NEW Parents were very concerned and worried. They had had another new son (VW Touareg) go through MANY VW Hospital visits - but in the end was a lost cause and had to be passed on.
After several anxious days of waiting for the transplant part, yesterday morning the part came in and Boy Blue went immediately to MiniSameDaySurgery. The procedure took what seemed like several hours to Boy Blues parents, but the TechDoctor called the parents and claimed a cautious success, until the MiniNurses (QA) could do PT on him. Boy Blue spent the night in recovery and went through several hours of early morning Physical Therapy. Boy Blues' parents were called with the good news - "He is as good as new, come pick him up!"
Long story - short, Boy Blue is back to normal, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers during the MiniHospitalization!

"And they all lived happily ever after."I love happy endings.

Great post. And I'm sure drugs were not involved (for the author, not Boy Blue.)

Is this high pressure fuel pump issue widespread? I seem to remember reading a couple other posts regarding this same problem..

High pressure electric pumps of all kinds are prone to failure. I wouldn't consider it a design or quality problem. If it breaks, you fix it, and move on. You shouldn't really expect something like a pump to be anything other than a wear item... it's under constant stress.

The vehicle (Boy Blue) had only 2,000 miles on it at the time of failure. The SA stated that there were two other minis that came in right after mine with the same issue.
>>I posted this problem at several other points earlier - during the 11 day ordeal<<

Interesting. Could be a weak batch of pumps from the supplier.
