So, how much does that extra 9 inches in the back help?

got bored at closing time at work tonight and snapped a few pics.

first me in the back of a clubman S

and then me in the back of a reg mini cooper

thus you can see the extra 9 inches makes a huge diff for all 6ft 300lb of me :-)

I can think of a hundred things to say about how an extra 9 inches in the back helps, but I can't think of a single way to say it that is safe for a family audience.

I was just looking at some stats on the Clubman, since I keep thinking it's so huge. So how about this for a size comparison. It's 10 inches shorter than a VW GTI, and 500 lbs lighter. It's 20 inches! shorter than a Honda Civic Coupe, but only 160lbs lighter. It's 19 inches shorter than the little Scion TC coupe, and 12 inches shorter than Scion XB.

Wow. Shocking. Not the extra 9 inches of length, but how small it still is. I guess it still would be able to squeeze into tight spots. Smaller is better sometimes.

I may convert with another kid along the way.

The "little Scion TC Coupe" is not so little. I test-drove one, and the amount of room is surprising, and it's a true hatchback, so that space is also very accessible. The Scion TC is a very nice package for the money. (of course, it's no MINI!)

I got a visual of this comparison this weekend when my neighbor, who bought the new Scion Xb, came home and parked in my other spot. I know they got a little bigger, but people still call them "small", and the Clubman "big". Right.

I once got up super early for a after-New Year's sale at the shopping mall. I knew the traffic would be murder. I left so early that I realized I'd still be super sleepy. I grabbed a pillow and the thickest blanket I could find. I found a spot near the elevator on the 2nd floor of the parking garage. I pushed the passenger seat forwards and folded down both seats. I rolled out the blanket and was snoozing in 5 minutes. I don't recommend using your Clubman for a motorhome but if the situation is so dire that you have no choice, it might be possible if you're not 6'4"! So yes, those 9 inches were worth the money.

The Clubman also has one other advantage; the rear seats fold flush to the rear boot area.

This is great, one of the few complaints about my MCS is that the seats do not fold flat.

One thing I find amazing about the Clubman is that it's nearly exactly the same size as a Miata with tons more versatility

I couldn't believe this until I looked on VW's website.

VW: 165.8" overall
101.5" wheelbase
MINI: 155" overall
100.3" wheelbase
The weird thing is the VW LOOKS smaller. I guess the vertical rear windows of the Clubman play tricks on my eyes.

the extra storage is great . i can fit 2 french horn cases and our music/stands with rear seats still up when i go to community orcheatra rehearsal with my son. $100+ groceries fit in there with the rear seats up. and you can store the 20 lb bags of pet food under the fold away floor. but the real benefit of the clubman is the 3 inch wheelbase stretch. so much more settled on the highways. and room for 6 footers in the rear seats beyond just around town shuttling. and from the photos, it looks like the boot is good for 6 footers as well. seems there was a silly car comparison a while back that tested a clubman vs a 7 passenger US car on an agility course. but the joke was the times included loading in 7 people. kinda crowded in the clubbie.

My Clubbie is very versatile. I just got fnished doing a pre-Summer interior cleaning and sorting/re-arranging. There is a surprising amount of storage space in the two under floor areas just inside the barn doors. I was able to put a bunch of tools, tape, oil, foul weather floor mats, raincoat top (for use if ya gotta do an emergency road-side repair), toilet paper (ya never know when this might come in VERY handy, eh?), paper towels, Windex, folding chair, bicycle tire pump, and car cover.

And ALL of that fit below the floor so that I can still load things into the car without having to displace anything. I *totally* love this car. It is the perfect combination of "big enough to haul yer stuff" and yet it can still park in the tiniest of spaces and gets pretty good gas mileage for a car this fast. And it gonna be faster still when my Alta AccessPort gets here next week - w00t!!

I switched from an 07 MCS to 08 MCCS for just that reason. Kids grew longer. at 10 and 6, they do well in the back. No complaints.
