R52 Squealing tires
Squealing tires
Hi!
Got an '06 cabrio. I'm having more and more "squealing" from my front tires (mostly the driver's one). I used to think it was just my clutchwork, but now I'm getting squealing from that tire when I go around corners. I've checked tire pressure. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

me too
i have about 5000 miles on my tires and i get the squeelz as well...,
i was able to fly around corners for the first few thousand miles and not a peep from the tires,
I just figured it was caused by normal tire wear.
would love to hear the real reason >>

I've got almost 4k on mine and the tires are just now starting to squeal. Almost embarrassing when taking a fast corner with spectators. Must be that the run flats are just now worn enough to loose a little traction and tell about it.
Are pressures at the right level (i.e. getting all the grip possible?) and have you been really aggressive driving? Which tires are you running I know I reached the point where I need to order winter or all season cause my summers won't hold grip at 60 degrees

Seriously though.. I have about 1800 miles on mine right now and yeah, the tires are a bit on the squealy side! It was worse when I was just learning to drive stick (ha!

) but now it's better. I wonder if tires would make a difference? If they're still squealing when you need replacements, you can see if the new ones do the same thing.

Thanks for all the comments and help. To respond, I have the stock 15' wheels and tires, and I don't drive that aggressively. Since it's an '06, I have the traction control (standard). The car has about 4000 miles on it. Tire pressure is good.
Any further thoughts would be appreciated...

My 05 MCSCa currently has about 17.5K miles on the run-flats. If I get on it hard, I hear a slight squeal too. I do notice that the front tires have much less tread than the rears...never been rotated though.
I'll be replacing the run-flats with regular tires in a few thousand miles too.

My tires don't even squeel when I try. Now If I have my step-son in the car, the DSC goes off and I can get them talking...
Hahahaha. I don't like the squeeling either.
The more tread blocks/siping you have (like on an all-season tire), the more squeeling you'll get. It has something to do with the tread blocks rolling over.....I'm not exactly sure.
A "maximum performance summer tire" with wide tread blocks will not squeel except on rare occasions.
I'm not positive, but I think adding more air will help as well, because it stiffens the sidewalls. Running 2-5 psi more than the factory recommends won't hurt your wear much, give it a try!
But first, double check to make sure your pressure hasn't dropped due to the colder weather. (a common problem)
Also, the surface seems to make a difference as well. In my experience, concrete seems to make tires squeel more than asphalt.
I can't wait to get rid of the factory all-season run flats to replace them with Falken RT-615's. I think we're going to buy a second set of wheels and run the factory wheels/tires only in the winter months.
