"How much do those things cost, anyway?"

Do the rest of you hear this question, or some form of it, as often as I do? I swear, at least once a week, some stranger asks me how much my car cost, or how much MINIs cost. It often happens at red lights, or in parking lots, and it still takes me aback. Maybe it's just me, but isn't that kind of a rude inquiry?

And the answer, of course, is that it depends. Roxy is pretty tricked out, and she got kind of pricey by the time I was finished adding goodies to her. Usually the people who ask are shocked when I do tell them how much she cost.

Do people who don't know better think MINIs are some kind of little cheap toy cars or something?

Just wondering...

I tell them "$62,995 unless you choose to get all four wheels, then it's an even $70K". I usually get a blank stare at this point.

Somebody thought it was $40,000 "...because it's a BMW, right?" I had to think twice before I burst his bubble (and mine ).

Not too far from it though I always feel bad when people ask that. I don't want people to know how much i spent on my car. :impatient

I usually just say they start around $18-19k. They don't need to now exactly how much I spent on mine, and typically the people who ask are just nosey and have no intention of buying one for themselves.

I get asked that a lot too. I usually just say, more than I though I would pay for a car, but it's worth it!

I tell them my car an 05MCSC, new fully optioned like mine is runs about $32.3 new, and I tell them I got it used for $25.3. Did it last night at a gas station where I put $43.00 worth of gas in my car!!! Then I tell them how much fun it is to drive...

Its an interesting question and yes, in cultured society I would call the question rude as in ... you want to know, its easy enuff to go look it up.

Sure a loaded MINI out the door can cost $40K, some admit to paying near $50K. However, try to get that money back and those "tricked out options" are quickly found to be worth far less than you may think ... the first two years of depreciation are killers.

I've had the exact same thing said to me many times. I think with my position at work, folks expect me to drive a much more expensive car than I do. I just tell them I get twice the fun of the $60K+ cars my cohorts drive around in, and I appreciate it more.

I get both ends of the spectrum. I have had a couple think that they are $40,000 to $50,000 but more often people who think that the MINIis like a smart car and is cheap and gets great gas mileage. I always get the question "What kind of gas mileage does that thing get?" That question comes from the people that think the MINI is a cheap economy car.

"I don't know. I always sit in the driver's seat." (or "I've never sat back there.")

I sat in the back before I purchased and it is ok. It is much easier to get in and out with top down.

I have taken a trip totaling 140 miles with 4 adults in mine. Not something I would want to do everyday. But it was ok.

Just wondering - how do you guys get such great gas mileage? Even when I was in my break-in period and driving extremely nicely (keeping revs low), I never got more than 25 mpg average.

ok, ok This forum is about what it cost ...

Not that i am now going to turn this into a gas mileage chat.
But when i say 37.8 mpg that is not my everyday average that is just my reported best mileage so far ...It happened on a trip from Ohio to Florida (highway miles) driving the flat roads in the Carolinas.
I usually avearge about 32-33 all around both highway and city miles combined.
so i like to brag about it , when i am asked the great gas mileage question... its not a lie if it really happened.

I have people say things like "I bet you're glad you have that car now that gas is $3/gallon."

I always reply "Yes!"

It has nothing to do with the price of gas, though.
