R52 Re-Screening the Wind Deflector

Re-Screening the Wind Deflector
Well, my wind deflector has two cigarette burns in it from where careless smokers have flicked their butts out of their windows and the burning coals have wound up there...also the fabric seems just generally faded and worn-out looking, probably from all that topless motoring I do!
Anyway, I was looking at the deflector and it looks as though the fabric itself it just held in with a spline or whatever it's called, similar to a screen door or window screen. It seems like it would be comparatively simplle to remove the spline and replace the fabric, just like re-screening a window!
Has anyone tried this? I'd like to know before I dive in, considerring how expensive the thing is.
If not, I'll post my results here!

You'd think some enterprising soul would have found a way to make money repairing these.
Have you tried calling Classic? They are so helpful in so many ways...though probably, they would just toss it out and give (sell) you a new one. Most of these must still be under warranty??
Which of course doesn't cover cigarette burns!
I think the risky part would be in removing the rubber spline without damaging it.
Anyone??

I don't know if this will help, but the wind deflector I had in my Miata was made by a company called Oris (in Germany, I think) and made, or used to make, deflectors for Miatas and OEM Mercedes and some other brands as well. The frame tubing and screen material was identical to my MINI screen, which makes me think that they may have made it.
If you're not comfortable trying to take it apart, I'd also consider finding some suitable mesh material and cutting a replacement panel that's the same shape as the upper panel but slightly smaller and sewing it onto the existing panel. Not as pretty but less risky.
