Remanufactured engine options for R52 S Convertible?
Hi - looking at possibly going for a remanufactured 1.6 for my R52 S convertible. Are they available in the US? And guidance on best sources? Or would it be better to have a specialist mini shop rebuild the original?
Thanks,
TC

Depends on what went wrong - but allmagauto in Tampa has been good to me for getting used parts. check with them on the cost of a used short block or long block ( Short Block - just the block and rotating parts - Long block is complete with head )
I'm not familiar with companies that re-manufacture engines although I am sure they are out there.
You could look for a used engine. Allmag is about the most expensive resource for used Mini parts, and if your not local you'll have shipping costs. A more cost effective option for used would be searching facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for people parting out their car. You could also check salvage yards by searching on car-parts.com.

I'm curious what's wrong with the original engine. What is the reason for exploring replacement engines? I'd have serious concerns with picking up a 20+ year old engine. Low mileage or not, 20+ years is a long time.

Had some more diagnosis done. It's a periodic low-level misfire caused by low compression in cylinder 4. At this point I'm planning to have a valve job. Not cheap but I know how this engine has been driven and (to your point) uneasy about spending on a replacement engine where I don't know the history. This car has huge sentimental value for my wife, so probably planning on keeping it running for a very long time 😅 Also had a reman transmission at 200K so we've already invested significantly in keeping it going.
Once you have the head off, inspect the valves to see if there's any indications for the misfire. Inspect the cylinder walls too for any scoring. If there is scoring, could be a piston rings issue. You'll just have to inspect closely once you get it apart.
Thanks! I didn't realize that was even an option to buy brand new.
