To change trans fluid - or not?

Hi There,

I have a 2007 Mini S Conv. and am just over 100K miles. Of those probably 70K are highway miles. My Mini service shop (British Sports Cars in San Luis Obispo) said the trans fluid is recommended to be flushed and changed at 100K, however they said if its changing OK it might be best to leave it alone. The transmission is working well and changing flawlessly.

Any thoughts / opinions very welcome on which way to go.

Thanks,

Daniel.

IMO I would change it. It can only make it better and it is preventive maintenance.

Since I planned from day one to keep our R53 until they take the keys away from me, I changed out the the tranny fluid at 25k and will do so every 25-30K. Considering what a Getrag costs to repair or replace, it's cheap insurance. Plus it sure shifts smoother after a fluid change.

I am changing out the factory fluid with Royal Purple and the car only has 9k. It's 2 years old. Was told the notchiness wil be less with better fluid. Will post if there is a differance. We are talking gear box and not auto right.

I bought a 05 cooper s convertible with very harsh jerking transmission gears, has 128k. i did the first drain few days ago, drove it for 2 days, has gotton 50% better so far, will drive a bit more and do my 2nd drain, and then 3rd. Purple oil is amazing.

100k lube change intervals are just plain nuts. Period. I change at 25,000 intervals in both my standards and automatics.

Pellican Parts (no affiliation, etc) has the filter, and the big transmission pan gasket as well as excellent instructions for those who wish to do this on their own and save a few $.
