R52 I want to go topless...
I want to go topless...
but Tater won't let me. Tater is an '06 MCS convertible. Last week, the top decided not to go down after I loaded her up at Lowe's. Of course, to do that, I had the top down (insert people's odd looks and the occasional "You're gonna get all that in that?"). Put top back up since didn't want delicate flowers to be battered by interstate wind. Tried to put top back down to unload the load and nada. Well, not exactly. The top won't go past the sunroof stage.
I've trolled most other threads looking for a similar prob and fix but am not finding what's happened/ing to mine. A) There was no groaning, popping or other audible signs of old age, B) the top-related red light does not blink at all, C) the rear passenger window is sluggish when going down, and D) I've got two dash lights that won't go out--passenger air bag and tire pressure indicators.
I tried the rear latch/sensor deal twice. I'm wondering if this is a general electronics issue or if anyone has any other ideas. Because the nearest dealership (Sterling, VA) is evil, I have to go armed w/ as much intelligent data so I don't get abused again.
Any ideas?

Your symptoms seem to suggest an electrical gremlin somewhere in the system. Initial reaction was a fuse, but I don't see how that would manifest itself by giving you the other anomalies (dash lights, rear window, etc.).
If MoS gives you so much consternation, perhaps you should drive the extra few miles to Alexandria to get this checked out. That's what I'd do.
BTW, great thread title...I predict you'll not lack for hits.

What?!?
Only five times a year?? Oh my. She could be feeling neglected. I'm top down even in the winter quite a bit. Heat cranked, top down, soft snow!! Oh yeah!!
Nope, not fuse. Checked that, too. I may have to head to Alexandria but I'm out past Front Royal so it's over 2 hrs for me to get there. I aim to do what I can myself first, then suck it up if I need to.
Pesky gremlins.
I quite like the thread tag myself!! Kinda sassy b/c I'm just feelin' that way!

I second that! Sarah Jane gets quite grumpy if we don't go topless for more that two days in a row! The late afternoon thunderstorms the last couple of weeks have been quite nerve-racking, I only dared to use the sun-roof since I don't feel like pulling over on 64 to put the top up. I've only had SJ since late March and the coldest I've had the top down is 32 degrees, I'm looking forward (he says with a sadistic tone) to November and December to see just how cold it has to be BEFORE I don't go topless! Anybody out there have any cold weather topless stories?

My all time FAVORITE time to go topless is durring big fluffy snow storms. The first snow of the season is definetly "Drop what your doing & go for a drive!"
I have taken quite a few of my friends on city tours durring the snow storms and they all are amazed that it isn't freezing (heater & heated seats) and when we get on the open road, the snow looks like the Starifield screensavers.
It never fails, the urge to put your hands up and grab the snow is too great. Every one does it.

You betcha! I also had my heated seats on high and the regular heater going, though the regular heater doesn't do much with the top down. Most of the heat it puts out get's sucked away in the wind.
I've thought that if I want to drive any more than the 15 miles or so that my commute is, I'd add a nice pair of overpant that would keep my legs toasty. Additionally, since I'm also a motorcyclist, I have a heated jacket liner that I could also hook up, but that's really not necessary. People think I'm nutz when they see me on the road in our "winters" here in Northern California, but I think it's great fun. Actually, it really amazes me how many people never seem to put the top down on their convertibles. Even yesterday, the first day of summer and nice and warm and pleasant, I saw a number of convertibles on the way to work and not one had the top down. And of all the other cars, only a small handful even had their windows down. I guess people are so used to living in boxes. The sleep in a box with the windows closed, they stay indoors on weekends, they work in a box, and they get to and from all the boxes they spend their lives in a box with wheels, all closed up tight. Weird.

I was crusing around last week and it was around 80F with no humidity, just an amazing day (for MD!). I had the windows and sunroof open and was trying to figure out how I could keep the doors and trunk open safely too and I saw 1 other car with the windows down and numerous convertibles with the top up!!
It is just beyond my imagination why people would not put the top down/windows down/actually want to breathe fresh air. I don't get it!!
I stand in awe!
I second that! I spend all my working day in a windowless basement and when it's time to go home, I'm all about the open space, be it in SJ or on the open (hopefully) road!
Actually, this seemingly amazing feat can be performed by any mere mortal should they choose to do so. All it takes to be comfortable is the proper gear. Do it! Amaze your friends! Make your enemies fearful! Surprise and shock the general public! It's great fun!
Hi! We have the same top issue but we believe there is a broken latch hook. Top won't go beyond sunroof. The passenger airbag light is for a recall letter we received. Dealer has to replace the airbag sensor I believe. Don't think the two issues are related though. Good luck!
Some funny reading here. I've got nothing against convertibles. I've had five in my lifetime. What I find amusing are the people that must think it's a sign of manliness to drive a car with the top down in cold weather. I see a similarity to the chest pounding, knuckle dragging clowns that think they're something special because they drive a a car with a manual transmission. ;-)

Here is the thread for the convertible top: with the parts. Check the cables set first. Then the set of front latches.

Occ sensor pad can be done at the dealer.
