I was just reading the NY Times and their slide show also shows the MINI... the car that is behind it in the other pic is a BMW and it was completely crushed. i think it was right in front of the building that was completely destroyed.
what a terrible accident.

In some of those shots it looks like the rush of air at impact blew the MINI over.
Nothing a little buffing wont get out. Just trying to lighten the mood...

MINI COOPER A VICTIM IN THE NYC CRANE COLLAPSE!!
Did anyone else see this too? I just now noticed it on the AOL front news page... emergency people are shown rolling the poor car over.
Wonder if anyone here owns it??
Can't tell what color it is but it does have yellow bonnet stripes and also yellow boot stripes.
Very sad incident made all the worse by a MINI taking the brunt of the crane collapse.

Horrific incident, and tragic for those impacted. My condolences to all those.
That said, when I read this...
The name of the bar is one of the most ironic real-life things I've EVER seen...
Another photo shows the fire & rescue guys actually rolling the cabrio out of the edge of the wreckage into it's current position.... not blown over...
That said, when I read this...
The crane’s blue cab and white jib, itself a latticework of steel, made a direct hit on a four-story town house at 305 East 50th Street, a modern stucco structure with apartments upstairs and a bar called Fubar on the ground floor. The building, on the north side of 50th Street, was demolished.

We've had a few construction deaths here recently, trenches collapsing and elevators collapsing, etc. My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives. Many of my students have fathers in construction. Most children look upon their fathers as heroes but somehow construction adds this larger than life aspect to it.
So sad.
So sad.
I'm sure there were a few scary moments as it was happening... loss of life is always tragic...
With all of the dust and debris on it... it looked like it was BRG with yellow bonnet stripes... nice to see the cabrio roof hold up though.
btw... there are 2 other threads in 2 other forums about this... any MOD want to merge them together??

Pretty sad when all you look for in a tragedy is if there was a Mini involved!?!
I don't think there's anything wrong with people...not really.
I saw this Breaking News story yesterday....and my first act was to call my dear friend in NYC and ensure he was alright. He was....and he was watching it on TV as well, his voice a bit choked up - and the first thought that came to his mind when he saw the dust cloud 11 blocks away was "omg, it's happening again" (referring to 9/11). It is a trauma that will long trigger the emotions of NY'ers.
My heart breaks for the family and friends of those lost in this seemingly senseless tragedy. I hurt for them. I put myself in their shoes. I wonder why bad things keep happening. I try to make sense of it all.
But when I saw the picture of the MINI (my friend in NYC is the one who sent it to me, as he's a MINIac too), I thought, "oh dear...not a MINI"...that doesn't make me a cold, heartless, unfeeling, and uncompassionate person.
I won't put words in their mouths, but I would venture to guess that the folks on NAM who posted the pic and commented about it thus far are simply identifying with it, because a MINI is real to them; whereas, unfortunately, the lost souls are names, faces, and identities that are not known personally to the masses.

"Oh dear, not a MINI"
I'm sorry but there is something disturbing about people who think inanimate objects have feelings or emotions
It's a bloody car, not someone's relative or friend. Society is in a bad way if we think damage to a MINI is somehow more important than the death of another human being.
Get help.

Probably shouldn't jump in but...
Tragedy is all around us. So is beauty. Just because I'm more likely to notice
a sharp looking Mini driving by me on the interstate than another brand, doesn't
mean I'm not appreciative of the other cars "looks".
Likewise, in a world full of pain... when I saw the picture of the Mini, I didn't
immediately mourn the loss of life involved. I thought of the car AND it's owner. If that makes me a bad person , I can live with that.
I did send up a quiet prayer for the other people involved. I figure most
other folks that saw the pic did the same.
Hope that makes sense.
