ALTA cold air intake issues

I just installed my alta cold air intake and when I went to start it up it will barely idle and if I give it gas it will only go to about 2000 RPM. Has anyone had similar issue? Must drive to work tomorrow. HELP!!!!

I think you did it on purpose to get out of going to work

unplug and replug the ECU also... I had some funky behavior one time when one ECU plug wasn't seated all the way.

Sorry that you are having problems! That stinks!

Something must have been disturbed during the installation that is causing the issue.

So lets go back a few steps:

1) Disconnect the battery

2) Remove the plugs to the ECU.

3) Inspect the plugs to see if any of the pins were damaged accidentally in the removal or installation. If they are bent you can either attempt to straighten them, or have it towed to the dealer for inspection / repair.

4) Double check the PCV connection etc. leading to and from the Intake Tube. If the car is an A/T, there are of course two to trace.

5) re-connect the ECU plugs and be sure they are plugged in ALL the way and tight.

6) Re-connect the battery.

7) Start car and let idle for 5-10 minutes before even touching the throttle or driving.

Let us know how we can help further!

Did you replace the intake hose also?

Check to make sure you didn't dislodge the throttle body plug either.

Adam, I disconnected the battery, I took both ecu ports out saw no damage, I unhooked the silicone tube from the throttle body and the shroud, I checked the intake tube ( 6-speed only 1) and made sure the throttle electrical connection was tight. Reinstalled silicone tube both connections are secure and reinstalled both ecu ports and now I'm letting it idle for 10min.

Boy I am not sure......this sounds just like my problem when I put on the intake hose. I dislodged the throttle body plug and it was doing what yours is doing.

I just got off the phone with ALTA and he believes it has to be the throttle plug not getting connection. I have the battery unpluged right now giving it time to reboot. He also said to try cranking the car 4 or 5 times to reset the ecu.

Does anyone think that by just putting a intake on will void my warrenty???

Short answer - No.
The intake will not be the "cause" of the failure of any system.

However, if you disconnected or broke something while doing the installation work, technically the dealer does not have to cover labor/parts to repair or undo what you did.

I went and got a code reader and the 2 codes say " manufacter control fuel/air
metering. Been on the phone with ALTA they are telling me to take it to the dealer, which the closet one is in Baton Rouge and I'm in Daphne AL. Just seems like ALTA would be able to help me more on this issue. The cold air intake is the only MOD in the engine bay.

Good idea.

Did you accidentally knock off some kind of sensor somewhere else in the engine bay? Look around; any loose plugs?

I am having it towed to Brian Harris Mini in Baton Rouge. can you believe that I have to have it towed 200 miles just from trying to install a freakin cold air intake. This blows my mind!! ps I didn't make it to work!

I am curious if the Mass Airflow Sensor or Oxygen sensor was accidentally knocked out or something.

In my old VW Golf(s), I had similar symptoms when the Oxygen sensor had been disrupted, or if it had failed... The engine basically goes into limp mode...

I AM ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP! I didn't even get any PM's yesterday or e-mails or calls to my cell phone (which I gave you the number)

Not to at ALL belittle your situation, but this product is in the VERY basic install realm, with little issues ever. So while it may seem like we aren't helping, there isn't as much technical discussion to have. Again, CALL ME if you have any more concerns. I want to help you ASAP!

The R53 doesn't have a MAF sensor (R56's do) It does have a MAP sensor, but it isn't close to this situation.

I REALLY think the ECU connection got buggered. (Like trying to push the plugs in crooked.) Or he was working with the ECU plugs with the battery connected and shorted something across.

My last thought is that if you REALLY were reefing on the TB you could break the plastic tube it is mounted to, but that is 1) Nearly impossible 2) would have to be HUGE hole for the car not to run.

I WANT to help!

I"ll throw in my experience. Did a JCW box and somehow managed to blow the fuse that controls the temp sender causing the temp gauge to read full hot thus not allowing the car to even crank over.

Lesson learned... undo battery first. Old habits are hard to break.

It is monday evening and the dealer still hasn't figured out the problem. All they have come up with is a vacumn leak code. Its been at Brian Harris Mini since Wed. P.S Adam thanks for your concern. I just became very frustrated. I can't believe the dealership can't even figure the problem
