The Italian Job

I just re-watched The Italian Job today, the remake with Mark Wahlberg. S'funny, that movie plays like a 2003 commercial for the "new" Mini Cooper. heh.

Yeah... as an owner...you can't watch that flick enough. My husband and I have watched it upon bringing both MINI's home. The opening MINI run with Charlize is fantastic, great driving... so fun...will watch anytime!

Also, have to mention the MINI chase scene in Bourne Identity..down the stairs..pretty fun!

A few months ago, Best Buy had a special on both the original Italian Job, a 60's version with classic minis, featuring a young pup Michael Caine, and the remake, with Charlize & company. The pair of DVD's only cost me about $9-11. Both movies are great. Definitely get out and rent or purchase the original as well.

i love them both...
i dont think you can really compare them...the old one has more class and witty humor...and the new one really shows off the capablities of the new mini's!!!

I agree. The movies, just like the Minis, are two completely different animals, from different times, etc., and should both be appreciated for what they are. I love the 60's style of cinema and the street scenes in the original, but equally enjoy the technologically-advanced style of current version.

Ditto on the previous few posts. They're both great flicks, but very different. I'm currently on a business trip to India, watched the original on my laptop coming over, saving the remake for the long (17 hour) flight home. Maybe I'll watch it twice. . .

"You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" spoken by Michael Caine in the original has to be one of my favorite movie lines ever!

As a film/story, the first one is much better - funnier, more clever and better told.

I totally disagree, sideache.

I found that the first one was boring, stuffy, and just plain old silly. I much preferred the remake. I am sure I am biased, because I'm only 33 years old, and don't "get" older movies.

I do respect the first film, but the remake really was much more interesting and fun for me, personally.

I love the original movie for its clever plot, fantastic acting, utterly stunning cinematography and that polished elegance that has been lacking in virtually all movies since about 1970. It is almost as if every single frame of the film was considered and lovingly shot.

The re-make could have used any car, it really would not have mattered, in many respects I wish that they HAD used virtually any other car because the combination of stunts and CGI, plus over-dubbed engine noises irritated me and actually put me off the idea of buying a Mini for a couple of years, not to mention the absolutely terrible continuity, pathetic script/lines, ceaseless and needless CGI and utterly rubbish re-write of a classic movie. The acting was generally poor, the lines where ill conceived and badly delivered and even the final chase was horribly done.

Really the second movie was a popcorn flick, that if they had used any other name and any other car, would barely have made it into the public consciousness, it would be released as a 'blockbuster exclusive' and then be on sale at Wallmart in the 99c section.

I own both movies and have owned both Classic (original) and new (impostor) Mini's. The old car, much like the old film has a certain amount of soul, presence and style that the new one (car and film) can at best attempt to emulate. Do not get me wrong, I love my MINI, it is great fun to drive, but it is nothing like the '72 Mini 1000 that I owned when I was 17, or the '68 Cooper S I raced for four years, or the '78 1275GT that I bought in 1983 or even the late 80's Mayfair that I bought fro my ex-wife or......
