R50/53 Toyota's Answer to the MINI??? Huh?
Someone told me this morning that Toyota is coming out with a new "cute" vehicle that is supposed to be their answer to the MINI. It's supposedly a mini, minivan. What the he**? How is that the answer to the MINI? Because it's small? Besides, MINI didn't pose a question?
Does anyone know about this Toyota version of the MINI?

There are two vehicles, and they will be a spin-off brand from Toyota, called the Scion. I think California will see them this year, and the rest of the country will get them next year. They are quite ugly from what I've seen.
Yup, so darn boxy ugly that they had to fill the rear with massive speakers just to get anyone to look at it durring the recent auto show. Eeegads!!! Looks like a small Astro van slammed to the ground. All the Scion products are wretched ugly! I mean, look at the Echo!!

They aren't actually new, they've been out in Japan for a while now. When I was in Japan I saw a lot of them. Suzuki and Nissan both have cars in Japan that look very close to the classic mini! Its kinda sad how theyre copying the mini like that.

They are also 108 HP.
Um, no thanks.
They are all show and no go. No wonder they are all either bling'd out or a rice nightmare.
But hey, if you want to be a pimp, that is your perogative. My taste and judgement of class lies elsewhere.

Thanks for the pictures. Now I can breathe a sigh of relief. There is no way in he** those things will compete, repeat, replicate, duplicate, mimic, or even sit in the same category as the MINI.
Barf-o-rama, mama! I haven't seen anything that ugly since the Aztec. The one looks so low, it'll hit field mice. God, Toyota, what is WRONG with you? I'd expect it from GM or Ford, but you??
I've seen everything. I can die now.

Autoweek April 28 issue had a 4 page spread on this POS. They will have a 1.5l 4 cyl found in the Echo. They are talking a whopping 108hp at 6000rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque at 4200. Absolutely not a MINI competitor. The big deal is they will be inexpensive ($13 - $14k) and can be customized a million different ways. The article quotes Toyota as saying "Scion buyers have all the rational demands of a Toyota buyer, but they also want more fun, personality and character. They're more concerned with how they look driving the car." Well, that's easy, they will look just as stupid as all those people driving Pontiac Aztecs. You couldn't pay me enough money to drive one of them.
Yes $85k and the two door version is over $100k

Ok, so I'm not so sure they're all that foxy but I am beyond happy--I'm thrilled, really--that these cars are coming. Perhaps this is the beginning of the end of giant, gas guzzling land barges. If these cars are preparing for US introduction--even if it's just in Cali so far--then someone obviously thinks they have a snowballs chance. And that makes me plenty satisfied.
