Has anyone quickly shifted from first to second and completely missed the gear?

Two times I have had pinheads wanting to get in front of me at a stop light. This is the typical scenario of stop light racing. Number one was a Hyundai V6 and the Number 2 a ricer (dont remember).

I dont want to beat them, just prevent them from passing and getting in my lane (the ultimate kill).

It has only happened those two times. When I do it with no one around, just by myself, it doesnt do it. Maybe the car is trying to tell me something.

I figure I am bringing it back to hard and fast and going past it somehow. Any ideas or likeness out there?

Let them pass you and then do it back to them. After you find 2nd gear...Life is not a race but when driving the MINI its hard to live by that rule.

Twice I've ground the gears from trying to shift too fast from 1st to 2nd.

I messed up and did that once. Not sure what instructions my right arm received, but that's what happened.

Ditto. Total surprise each time. How can something so automatic not work each time?! Kind of like missing the seat when you go to sit down in the bathroom- and I felt about as stupid

I really believe that I just brought it back too hard. I think when I try to do it without competition, I just flick the wrist and dont force it back. This is why I have never made it happen in controlled environments.

So, next race, "flick"! see ya!

Nope, not me.
Have an 03 MCS, and I love the 6 speed Getrag tranny (although mine is making noises as if the throwout bearing is nto quite right).
Never missed a shift!

Off topic, but what kind of noises. I'm getting a ticka-ticka-ticka nose (almost sounds like a loose tappet), but only when I'm stopped and release the clutch rapidly with the transmission not in gear.

Happened to me once. but they're right. If you relax and try not to force the shift you wont miss.

Yes, it is a ticka-ticka-ticka or clackety-clackety-clack.
I tis only audible when stopped and idling, and only when in neutral. It disappears when you depress the clutch. Yes, when I first heard it I thoihgt it sounded like tappet noise. It does defniately come from the tranny though. I only really hear it when I am sitting inside, with windows and sunroof closed.
At the recent Houston MINI meet, a couple of other MCS owners listened to it and decided it sounded not-normal, and reported that they had no such sound.
No conclusive answer yet. On my recent road trip I had a dealer in Tacoma check it out, just to make sure I could drive back to TX without problems. The dealer thought it would be ok to drive back but to have it checked out once back. Since it is a 50 mi drive to the dealer, I am waiting for the first service coming up soon. The Tacoma dealer definately noticed the noise and confirmed it was coming from teh tranny. However, he said that Getrags are inherently noisy.

My own guess at this stage is that the noise is caused by the throwout bearing, which will have to be replaced soon, but that is only a guess.

Once I find out more, I will post findings, and ask you to please do the same.
Thanks and Cheers,
Markus

I've had mine to the dealer. We've got a great one here in Pleasanton CA. They think its a bearing, but probably not the throwout bearing. The factory rep. is supposed to look at it this Friday. The dealer expects that he'll OK a tranny swap. They've already ordered a replacement. (I said they were great.)

There's a thread I started on this, named, "clutch noise?" I'll post the results there.

Excellent, thanks,

I will just not force it.

No ticks or clacks going on like you others....
