New to me Mini (2005 mcs) and concerns I'm having
So...I received my 2005 mcs today with 7980 miles on the clock...My early driving impressions are all good, the handling and acceleration are both smile inducing...but I do have a concern, after spirited driving I smell something similar to a burning rubber odor...Now I've read 4 or 5 posts on here describing various scents and none of them seem a good match; it's not my tires (it's raining here), I don't think it would be the SC belt (so few miles) So does anyone have any other suggestions...I imagine at <8000miles I could take it into the dealer and have them look at it, but an answer here may save me the time.
Also, about the range displayed by the OBC....I filled up today and it took 13.9 gallons to get it there...When I turned the car back on it showed a range of 265 miles...It hasnt gone up from there...
Any ideas on that one?
thanks in advance,
Nik

you know im in the same position i have a 2005 with 12700 miles on it and its's making some strange rattle noise, and when i first start it in the mornings it idles really rough..i'm going to take mine in really soon...and for your car i'd do the same, so few miles means one thing, FREE SERVICE!!! take advantage of it bro..
Cant say I have had those smells since mine was new but I do get steam from the hood in a light rain in stop and go traffic or when I stop at a red light. I currently have about 4500 miles on my MINI. I would definately take this opportunity to build a relationship with your nearest MINI dealer and have her checked out.
Cold weather (around 30 degrees) brings out the rattles in my '05-S...just a few. You guys have to drive your cars more, mine has 37K on it since August '04 it's a July 3 '04 build, very early '05. Take avantage of all the free service and change your oil every 5K not 10K. And best mod for the $ is the -15% pulley, should have come that way from the factory.
So the smells could be....just smells that the car makes? It sucks...I live in Sammamish, Washington about 20 minutes out of Seattle, but according to MiniUSA my closest dealership is 45min away.
Any ideas on the range thing?

I've got a 2007 MCS cabrio (~1200 miles), same 'hot plastic' smells... But just occasionally. It doesn't stink up my garage anymore, but I smell it sometimes with the top down, or when the car is just warming up (top up). I'm heading back to my dealer in a couple of weeks and will let you know what they tell me...
What does synthetic oil dribbled on the exhaust smell like?

I get that smell in my '06S after a run in the rain, I think it's road gook burning off the exhaust since I don't smell it when I raise the hood, er, "bonnet"

OBC Range is determined by your driving style and your average MPG. I imagine the "spirited driving" you mentioned is responsible for the relatively low range.
