My antenna broke

Damm my antenna was broken off. Not the mast but the, heck I don't know what to call it, the bump. So now I need a replacement. I don't suppose that anyone has one laying around or a totaled mini that I can get?

Is there a web site to get stuff like that cheaper than the dealer?

Sorry about the antenna, ninjamini. Check out www.mossmini.com and see what they offer for antenna replacements. Good luck!

There are a bunch of stubby antennas, and if you post a "WTB Antenna" thread in the classifieds (on NAM, of course) someone will see you their old stock one for not too much money.

Ouch!

How did that happen? I don't suppose it would be covered under warranty???

It might be worth getting a dealer quote and having your auto insurance pick it up. But then again, maybe if the part is cheap enough it's not worth it...

Good luck...

Someone broke it. I had a Sirius Radio dog on the end so I think that either they hate Sirius or hate Mini Coopers. I cant imagine either.

And GOD I hope that its not so much that I need to turn it into insurance. It just bolts on. One bolt. Thats after you pull back the headliner. I figure $100 tops from the dealer. But I was looking for a cheaper option. I dont even care if it works. Heck who listens to FM anymore. I just dont want water dripping into the car.

Man that sucks... People can be such m*r*ns...

Do you have a local salvage yard? They may have a busted up MINI that you could grab that part from. Might be worth walking the yellow pages and making a few calls...

Sounds like a claim against the Comprehensive coverage of your auto insurance. (Unless the cost to repair is greater than your deductible.) At a minimum, get a quote for the replacement. Then you can decide how to proceed.

Frankly, I don't know what the price of a replacement is. In addition to the parts cost, there is the labor involved in installing the replacement. That is also something for which I am not aware of the magnitude. However, if I am not mistaken, the damage was not your fault. Therefore, why should you be penalized (by having to resort to a salvaged part (it is not as if everyone has a spare mount lying around; antennas are another matter) and doing the repair yourself)? It is not as if the vandalism claim is going to result in a rate increase for your insurance policy. So, at a minimum, if it were me, I would at least get a quote for the repair. Then, once you have the cost to repair, you can make a decision as to how to proceed.

I actually took the antenna off once. Its a 5 minute job and 2 minutes of that is drinking the beer. It really is one bolt. Besides I have stores that will do it for me no charge. I just need the part. And GOD I shure hope that its not more than $100 for this piece of plastic.

Yea, I had that happen when my girlfriend took my MINI thru an "unauthorized" car wash. Ripped the antenna right out and left a hole. It wont leak water into the roof so don't be worried. I bought a new base with all the inards from the dealer for like $40-45. Install was suprisingly easy, and I heard the 2005s were tough. If you have a 2004 or earlier, the base just twists right off from the top. But anyway, pop off the lid of the box thing on the roof above the back seat and you can get to most of it, then gently pull the headliner down from the trunk to switch the wire connections. All you need is an adjustable wrench and small-to-medium size fingers. Press everything back into place and you're done.

Good luck!

I just happened to attempt a stunt maneuver yesterday and got my antenna chopped off by one of those moving arms that block the entrances and exits of parking lots. Luckily it didn't hit the body of my Cooper, but did manage to rip off the antenna along with part of the base. Please tell me that this part is less than $100 and this story will remain amusing. There is no way I am going to pay the dealer to do the repair (I think someone else got a quote of $400-$500).

Some kind of jerk that got dropped on their head as a child. What kind of jerk would go around and slash your tires? (That happened to me once in a past life - not just my car, but a whole line of parked cars, and the episode happened in one of the more tonier districts of San Francisco....)

Remember the story out of the far east of the american who spraypainted some cars.

They caned him. And here were afraid to do anything bad to bad people.

The far east = low crime........USA lotsa crime.

Welcome to the good old usa.

Even further back in time there was a book with a title to the effect of The Ugly American.... The Cliff Notes version was a discourse on arrogance that occurs from being an economic, political and military power and how that arrogance can get one into hot water with the locals. A fear of being caned may suppress the urge to spray paint cars (or slash tires), but it doesn't do much for the underlying arrogance. That arrogance has got the U.S. mired in an adventure that has resulted in 3,100+ KIA and many horribly wounded (which in past conflicts would likely have been KIA) - all because of a series of lies that were perpetrated in the selling of the adventure.

This is why I joined the forum...my antenna broke and the BMW people had no clue. I read this post and it was extremely helpful. I got into the headliner and realized the whole of the base does need replaced. I was easily able to disconnect one piece of the wire connection, but the other would not disconnect. It has to, or I cannot replace the antenna. The antenna broke off and left the metal bit deep in the screw in part so I cannot just simply buy a new antenna and screw it in. How do I disconnect the other wire? See attached picture for the wire I cannot get dislodged. Please help!

Hmmmm. . . I'm sorry, it was over a year ago that I did it, but I do remember having one set of wires that click together, and another wire, probably the tuner, that connects differently. I don't recall having problems separating it. Does anyone have the bently manual? That may help.

Also, if you could move the camera back about 6 inches more for a clear shot, and take a pic of the end for connection on the new base, that may help show where the connection point is. Do you have all the new pieces?

Ugh. I have no new pieces. I did my best in simply getting to that particular piece shown in the picture. Color me naive, but I just am of the belief that I should be able to disconnect that metal piece from the wires and attach a new metal piece. See how well versed I am in the understanding of it all? I did get the broken antenna re-attached to the outside of the car, but it still remains broken on the inside. The connection is not there. I will call the dealership tomorrow and ask lots of questions. Somewhere in this thread I read that it took 5 minutes to replace an antenna...2 for the beer. That's funny. It took me over an hour to get into the headliner to get that metal piece out and then while replacing the headliner, the screen under the sunroof snapped back and smacked me right between the eyes. It hurt like hell, but I had to laugh. The shape of that release tab was imprinted clearly on my forehead. After getting everything put back together, I spent the 2 minute beer time pressing the cold beer to my wound. It worked. I am bruise free.
