R50/53 Historical Question re R50/53 Motor
Historical Question re R50/53 Motor
Hi, I was just curious if anyone here knows the history of the first generation motor, how it came to be in our cars and if it used in any other commonly available vehicles.
I read somewhere that it was Chrysler-sourced and made in Brazil. Did Chrysler have anything to do with Mini before BMW bought them, or was the engine for the MINI BMW's doing that was just sourced from Chrysler for cost/convenience?
Thanks for any info.

As I recall it is a tritec engine. You can google tritec and probably find a lot of information. It is a Brazilian engine, which is a good thing. I had a VW diesel with the engine made in Brazil which carried me 300,000 miles plus. The car still started in the winter when I had to dispose of it due to family changes.
Cool, thanks for the tip re Tritec. That explained several things. It's interesting that the engine was used for export-market Neons and PT Cruisers, but not for the States.
Anyway, it's a great engine! Sometimes, globalization can be our friend.

Unfortunately the Brazilian factory has since been sold to the Chinese company Lifan so the technology can be reverse-engineered...
don't know how many spare Tritec motors were made...
From Wikipedia (admittedly a public-access encyclopedia-like resource, but in this case accurate)

In February of 2006, the Chinese auto company Lifan bid to purchase the factory after 2007, when the current Tritec engine is no longer needed by BMW and Chrysler. Lifan's plan calls for moving factory tooling to China where it would produce a derivative of the Tritec engine by 2008. These engines would then be used by Lifan to begin an automobile export business to Europe and North America.
Remember that 2007 and 2008 MINI Convertible will continue to offer the standard and Supercharged versions of the 1.6L TRITEC motor.
The R56 based convertible is scheduled to arrive in 2009, and will use the "Prince"family of engines that currently power the 2007 R56 MINI hardtop.
My bad - should change wording to "don't know how many spare engines WILL BE made..."!
I didn't know they weren't fitting the R56 cabrios for the new motor (double negative intended).
I wonder what the history is of the Rav4 motor? It's a gem, really... Does that thing come with a stick, I wonder? Bonnet stripes? Checquered mirror caps, perchance? Anybody got Photoshop...?

Everything you ever wanted to know about the RAV4 here:

Your transmission choices in the current RAV4 are 5-speed manual and 4-speed or 5-speed automatics. Pretty exciting, eh?
