I'm hearing all kinds of conflicting theories of how to break in my NEW MINI COOPER 'S' ,c,auto .The MA at the dealership says there's no break in time required.. Reading NAM I think this guy is way off... Please set this straight ,,, thank you km

This is coming from the Mini Owners Manual page 96.

Engine: 1,250 miles do not exceed 95 MPH/4,500 RMS
Tires: 200 miles
Brakes: 300 miles
Clutch: 300 miles (if app)

Some will argue these numbers...but having a dealership argue that is odd.

Hope this helps.

To keep your warranty in tact I would follow the break-in in the Owner's Manual.

One thing I did was change the oil after the break in period.

I would follow the recomendation in your owners manual. Those BMW engineers just might know what there takling about. I changed my oil and filter @ 3000 miles.

ran both of ours to the break in spec as close as possible. the MCSa was harder - it wants to hold and shift past 4500. tricky-ier than the manual to keep in the right rev range.

I also changed the oil in them after break in. The 05 MCSa has about 8700 on it, the 06 MCS about 10600, no issues, both run strong.

The only thing I would add to what has already been posted is to vary the engine load (while keeping the engine speed below the 4,500 rpm level). If you have some hills in your area, going up and down the hills will give you the varying engine loading.

Look out for the kick-down

With the auto, the only problem I have had is when I had to put my foot into it to merge with some traffic. If you're not careful, you'll be heading for the red-line in 0 seconds flat. I use manual mode in those situations so that I have some control over which gear I am in.

Yep - I had same breakin experiences as others - kept it under 4500 as best as I could. I found that staying in "D" vs. "SD" made it easier to hold the revs down. And it took me a while to learn to NOT push the gas hard enough to kickdown. And I did the varying revs, pushing it hard through 2nd and 3rd right up to 4500 several times in the first 100 miles to seat the rings (if that really matters).
