Trouble shifting into 1st gear

(thought about posting this in the 1ST GEAR section)

We own a 2006 MCS (July build date) and once in a while I have trouble getting it into first gear. It's not when I'm autocrossing it or anything like that. It's normally when I pull up to a stop light and put it in neutral. Then, when the light turns green I go to put it into 1st gear and it won't go in. If I'm on a hill, I can let the car roll a little and then it will go right in. Otherwise I have to put it into 2nd and move the car forward a bit (some times I just drive off in 2nd)

I'm wondering if this is a linkage problem that can be fixed by the dealer?

Mine (7/06 build)does/did the same. Its loosening up as the miles go on. I'm at 4400 and its much less noticeable now. When it does that, do a quick double clutch. Its not something that I'd let them put a wrench on unless its really pronounced or you just can't stand it. I've had this happen with other cars throughout the years. Its just the nature of the beast.

Same here... When I first got the car had it happen a few times a week, but it seems to be getting better as I put miles on the car. I have about 6k on it now and it seldom happens. When it does, all I do it put it in 2nd, roll it forward a few feet then shift down to 1st and it always pops right in.

Good to know that other people have experienced the same thing and that it's going to get better. I guess I won't worry about getting it fixed.

Thanks!

some cars are like that. you can shift to 2nd let it roll just a hair while
shifting back into 1st. double clutching into 1st also helps sometimes.

I have an 02 MC, no idea on the build date, but I've had this problem as well, I'd say once every 2-3 weeks it happens, but when it does happen I'm stuck for at least a couple minutes and then I'll try putting it into 2nd and it wont want to go in there either. It almost feels like its jammed. Usually I just release the clutch (in neutral of course) and then I press it again and try shifting it back into gear when it wants to.

Same here...except that I just had a new clutch installed. The first 2000 mi I put on the new clutch, it was hard to get into 1st and worse for reverse. I would always have to let the car roll while I was putting it in gear. The car would also start to move as soon as I began to let out the clutch (about 1/4in). It has slowly gotten better and now after about 3000 mi, It goes into 1st fine, but reverse is still a little rough.

"IN THE FLESH" ...I was having that problem for a couple of days until my throw out bearing broke and the clutch would not release. I figured I would drive it to my mechanic without using the clutch...and half way there, the clutch got stuck half engaged from the heat it melted the bearing parts.

Hopefully it is not that! Have you tried pumping the clutch when that happens? That may help. It may be just a hydraulic problem...like the slave cylinder or master cylinder.

Good Luck!

Try clearing the gear by pushing in the clutch and putting it in 3rd or 4th, then moving into 1st. Sometimes its just the gears hitting tooth peak to tooth peak. Selecting another gear will clear the gears so they mesh.

Mine won't go into reverse a lot of the time and selecting 4th seems to clear it.

Mmm, I did forget to mention (I was actually about to start a thread about this) but everytime I go WOT and shift into 2nd gear, it does a short grind into 2nd . Its been going on for about a week now, but only at WOT. I'm guessing its the synchros? Yes? No? Maybe?
