No kidding. I honk and wave when I see another new MINI. They usually don't (which is odd I think). They probably think I'm whacked! It's just fun to say "Hi" to another since they are so few and far between.

Classics are classics. That's that. The new MINI is not trying to replace or out-do the classic original Minis. It's totally new. I don't see why people hate it. They must be afraid or jealous. Does the owner of a 1959 Corvette hate the 2002 'Vette? Classic Mini owners should be glad that the Mini is back. With the new MINI here, the interest in classic Minis and sales has increased. So what's the deal with the nasty tude? (I know not all classic Mini owners dislike the new MINI.) Can't we all just get along?

Unfortunately this happens with just about every vehicle model out there. The owners of them get very defensive with their model year of vehicle that they own compared to the changes that are seen in models prior and post to what they own. I've been in more than a few forums and owned a few cars that went through a major change. A lot of people just cannot adjust to the change, and stand by their preference of style in the car, and are willing to defend it all all costs. So I'm not too worried about what other MINI owners are going to say. I have my opinions about the older ones and they have theirs regarding the new ones. I'm sure everyone here has a vehicle that they have seen go through some major changes in its time, that they can make an ugly face at. As long as you enjoy the car you have, that's all that should matter.

It's like that with almost everything.. look at the whole mac vs linux vs pc debate. Who really cares? And if a classic Mini has a problem with us new MINI owners, tough crap, it's their cross to bear, not ours. I would bet the the majority of us MINI owners do actually like the Mini, and wouldn't mind having one of thoes in the driveway to keep our MINI company.

And if you don't wave Hi to a fellow MINI owner, i think you should have your MINI revoked... we don't need crab apples driving MINIs...

I ran into the same thing before with my 1999 Miata, it was the first year of the new body style and suddenly there came the distiction of a M1 and a M2 but after a while the attitude seemed to fade. Also, I live near an old 60's Mini and each time we drive by each other we flash lights, and he started it.

Oh yeah, well, /I/ <will> have a 2002 MINI Cooper S...and it's going to be SOOOOOOO much better than those pesky people who think they're better than me w/their fancy-shmancy 200-THREE model year. So what if yours will come with an extra key and some other colors and stuff...my year is the ORIGINAL and WAY better!! No, I'm not jealous?!

Oh, and I hope you all realize I'm kidding

Not all Classic Mini owners dislike the New MINI. In fact, I'm guessing that most Classic Mini owners actually like the New MINI. It's just a case where the few are the loudest. This all started in the UK with BMW 'dumping' the Rover group except for the MINI. My guess is the Brits didn't take kindly to the way BMW went about it. Thus started the old vs. the new. It does't need to be that way here in the US. In our local Mini club more and more members are buying New MINIS, oh, that includes me. MINIS are Minis, Coopers, Coopers S, doesn't matter what your choice all MINIS, Minis are one thing, FUN! That's what binds all MINI drivers together

from what I've heard I think this is more of a British thing( the hating the new MINI vs. the Mini thing). A bit of misplaced national pride I think. Reminds me of the Fawlty Towers episode "The Germans are coming". If you've ever seen it you'll know what I meen, if you haven't, shame on you, go rent it right now. Very funny. The main thing is that we still wave/flash/honk at them. Let them know how little they are being for acting so stuck up, and show them the true MINI spirit. well enough of my pep rally MOTOR ON!

I love my new Mini and I owned an "original" many moons ago. Clearly, the "new" Mini is an original in itself, made by a new manufacturer. It's a whole new car, drawing a whole new "crowd" In comparing the old and new Mini's, I think the new Mini is really a BMW 1 series (and I say that as a compliment to the car) and so the "original" car owners do seem to separate themselves from this new project. So what? I also own a Porsche 356 and people I know that also have that type car feel Porsche stopped making cars when they abandoned that body style and certainly stopped being Porsches when they ceased making air cooled engines (forget front or mid engine models-those are fancy VW's to them). Its just all part of the mentality that anything different is wrong. Heck, on this website you have people extolling the virtues of the "S" and "dissing" the Cooper (you're different and I'm better than you). As far as calling the new Mini a cult (uuugghhh!) if sharing the joyful experience of owning this car with other new Mini owners makes it a cult, well o.k. But how about calling it a Club. Cult is just so

If people want to be sour about it, then they can just be that way......

I don't give a darn if someone doesn't like my Mini because I DO and that is all that matters......
(And I know all of YOU DO TOO!!!!)

I actually look forward to motoring into work in the morning!

I went to a Brit Car Club breakfast yesterday not knowing what to expect. I didn't know these people. The response was very positive. Several of them wanted to sit in it. I let them. There were some very cool classics on hand but I think I was getting most of the attention. They welcomed the MINI and invited me back. I'd have to say I think the new MINI's are modern, instant classics. Time will tell. MB
