What mileage did your first service occur
I'm curious on when folks first service occurred. I'm siting at 10, 632 today and the indicator still reads 1875 more miles. that will be over 12,400 before I get my first service.
Mine goes in monday. With 13800 miles mine reads -750 miles to service, so say 13000. I'm not concerned with the overage, oil has been changed twice already. One that I did, and one the dealer did for free.

I have around 7500 miles on the odo and the service indicator reads 2600 miles still to go....
But since one year was up, Westchester MINI called me in for a low mileage service, where they did everything except replacing the cabin microfilter.
They have not yet reset the service indicator, since that can be done only after the microfilter is replaced.

I'm at work and can't look at my paperwork but I think I was at around 12,500 miles or so for my first change. I'm now at 31,000+ and waiting another 1,000 for the second change. :-O
I checked my oil recently and had to add a little to get it "between the marks." Synthetic or not, I don't like it to get low.

i think i had mine done around 11k miles or so.
They will change it at one year regardless of your mileage. Mine may be under the 11,600 number, but they'll change it. Personally I've changed my oil twice now. Once at 2,000 miles & once at 7,000. The next change is on MINI.
I heard that the service countdown is calculated not only from mileage but also from driving time. My daily drive involves a lot of stop and go city driving, which means low miles for the amount of driving time. Mine will hit the first service around 9400 miles.
I just had my first service and it was about 10,200 mi. It's hard to fqthom waiting that long but it is synthetic...it's supposed to work that way. My next service is at 1 year or 15,000 more miles. It was tough to faqthom waiting that long, but do you really think that a dealer would do anything that might hurt your car when they would be the ones that would have to repair it?
Mind sharing some gear head info on how to change the oil? I just got mine (04MC) and would like to change the oil.
I have quite a long way to go since I only have 1650 miles on my car, but so far it's saying 8350, so that would make it exactly 10,000! I'm not concerned about the oil change thingy... While it feels weird not having to change the oil every 5K or so, these are the intervals that they recommend, so I figure if something horrible happens to the car it is covered under warranty as you are following the recommended procedures. I just check the oil and will top it up if it falls too low...
In addition to "driving time" or average speed, I would think that "calendar time" matters as well - a given mileage cranked out evenly every day probably has a different wear and tear impact than a few longer but infrequent trips totalling the same mileage.

.Use a good quality synthetic to top it up.
My first service was at about 13000 miles, 90% highway.
I changed the oil at about 6000 miles.I Change the oil 1/2 way between services. My 3+ year old, 83+k miles Cooper has "burned" a little over 3 quarts.

All you need is a filter ($8 or so at mossmini or minimania), a 36mm socket, a 13mm (I think...worth double checking)) socket, a jack and stands, and the oil. My '06 MCS hit 1500 miles and I wanted to change the oil as soon as the break in period was over. The only tricky part (at least for us) was getting the oil-filter housing threaded back onto the engine--the first time my boyfriend thought he had it, but the moment I revved the engine to test for leaks, oil came spurting out!
We re-threaded it, tightened it, and now I can't wait to really push those RPMs up to where they should be!
Good luck!
I had the dealership change mine at a little under 5k. However, my MINI had to have its whole tranny replaced (my MINI was only 2 months old -- brand new 06!!) so when it went in for that, I said to change out the oil... had to pay for that though. :-/
