R50/53 All That Talk About The 07
Hmmmmm, really? So how long have you had these feelings of missing something? Perhaps a subtle mod or two...a tweak here and there...may prove helpful.
Or...might I suggest that you embrace the special qualities of the model you have, knowing that in the grand scheme of MINIdom, the '07s are nothing more than a turn of the next page. Each model year has features that make it unique and highly desirable. We haven't spent much effort on this level of appreciation because it was all so new, but we will need to. The early MINIs were too good to let pass into the night just because the "latest, greatest" is here. AND we will have to stretch ourselves to love both old and new (and I'm just talking MINIs here) even though we have our favorite features which may or may not be gone. No....people will seek out MINIs like yours, yes they will.
I, for example, have an beat-up old (not really, looks awesome!) '03 with a retro four-slat grill and hopelessly outdated bumper-strips. How passe!! But....it is an R50.... straight from the pen of Frank Stephenson....same cast-off color as photographed w/ John Cooper himself (IB)....the first among the new MINIs. So, yeah, I'm proud.
I'm just saying that you have to discover for yourself your car's venerable place in the great MINI story....know it and love it!! The marque may move on, but MINI ownership can't just be about the latest, greatest (or at least it shouldn't be). We have to develop this depth, this appreciation, of our cars' past, present and future.
Or you could just trade yours in for an '07.

I consider MINIs to be a modern classic which IMO means they will never look outdated and they will continue to appeal to people for years to come. Appreciate the qualities that make your MINI so great and recognize that while the MINI will continue to evolve your car is still part of the great MINI history. The 07s will be different, some will love them more than the R53s and some will hate them, but I think both will be great cars in their own ways. So just be proud that you are a MINI owner and that you are part of a group of enthusiasts unique in today's auto industry. I think a MINI is like fine wine, it gets better with age
(not that I'd really know because I've never had wine, but I can just imagine... well, no, no I can't actually...

I too finally bit the bullet and rushed out to buy a 2006 Mini (my first) after seeing what has happened to the 2007.
Then again, the 2007 could be the "New Coke" of the Mini story, and if next year is horrible economically they could be quite rare automobiles indeed before it is all said and done!

Right now, I really dislike the entire design of the R56. However, I felt the same way about the new 3-series coupe and yet, in person, it is incredibly beautiful!
Let's not hate on the 2007 until we see it in person... And as much as I love my supercharged Brazilian iron lump, I'll bet the modern turbo engine is going to be surprisingly sweet.
I sure hope I like the R56 in person!

In your case the trade will likely be done very quietly.

Just some hack that writes for Automobile magazine & he says he thinks it's lost it's edge.
Well I for one love my Classic Coke 2006, but will reserve judgment on the New Coke until I can taste it on a twisty road.
Even if it tastes sweet I'm sticking with my Classic flavored one.
