Hmmmm.... define "trunk panel".

If you mean the thing that is connected to the hatch via cables and covers the storage area when closed, then that's easy... disconnect the cables from the hatch, and then pull the panel straight out.

Do you mean the little side panels? They have small detent clips. The battery cover lifts up.

Or, fold down the seats

Or, lift the panel up from the floor of the boot.

There, I think we've covered all of the possibilities

If you're talking about the panel on the inside of the hatch (below the rear window), it is held in by several torx screws and spring tabs. Once it is unscrewed it can be gently pulled off and put back on. When you reinstall it, be careful of where the panel meets with the lower corners of the window--they tend to try to fold under--just watch this area before you "snap" the panel in place.

Just start pulling downward on the panel from the bottom corner of the hatch panel and they'll come loose with a little force. Once you "unsnap" that first one, you'll understand. Then work your way around and then to the middle ones. There are about 8 clips. You don't really need to worry about these spring clips--they are about 3/4" tall and 1/2" wide, very durable, and affixed to the panel. They are made to snap in and out of the metal frame. I've taken that panel off three times so far to mod the rear hatch handle. Just pay attention to the plastic panel and be sure not to bend the panel when you pull on it.

Would it be rude to enquire what modifications you are making to the rear hatch handle?

Nothing major. I'm currently trying to eliminate some of the unneccessary chrome on my Cooper. I dechromed the hatch handle, painted it to match, and masked the lenses so the license plate lights didn't illuminate the entire rear of the car.

BTW, for those who say there are NO BMW logos on the MINI--they are on every part of the rear hatch handle!

Wow, I wish I had know, i would have traded you the chrome handle for my paited one. I think it'd look great on the backof the S.. echoing the tail pipes, and all.

Yeah, it's strange that people say that.. it's right on the side of the Accelerator unit. You can see it when standing outside the drivers side door.
