I took my wife to work this morning in my MC, and on the way we stopped at a favorite coffee shop, got our usual espressos, plus she got a raspberry crumb bar. She eats the damn thing as we walk back to the car.

We drive off, and I look over at her in the passenger seat, and she's pouring the crumbs out of the bag into her hand and eating them. I couldn't believe my f-ing eyes!

If I'd said anything, she would have laughed at me (it's not like I've ever worried about whether our apartment is clean), so I stayed silent. You wouldn't believe how many crumbs there were on the floor, on the seat bottom, in between the seat and the console!

What the hell is going to happen when we have kids? What kind of example is she going to set for them? I half expect to catch her eating an omelette off the seats tomorrow, disposing of bleach on the carpeting, cleaning her paintbrushes on the roof...

 

Chill. Go get the vacuum cleaner out. You need to sweep up that light dust anyway. It'll make you feel better.

I rarely let my kids in the MCS. And they're 21 and 23 now. I usually suffer through driving the Expedition again if they need to go with me.

The wife doesn't like the MCS. It scares her.

 

You may want to hold off on the kiddie plans - at least for a little while, lol.

you'd shoot me. Milk spatters on the rear leather from the baby throwing her sippy cups when they don't meet with her approval. Leaves all over the place from parking under trees with the windows open. Rain spots in the inside from doing the above before it rains at night.... The list is endless....

I'm hoping the dirt will form a thick enough layer that with the first rain it forms a protective hard candy shell! Just like M&Ms....

ps, it's just a car. If you have kids they emit so many messy items (can you say fingerpaint with snot on the TV screen?) that this will seem like the very small issue it really is.

 

Agreed....kids are one thing, but a grown adult is another. You two had better talk........now!!!! Dont' let this get too far out of hand. This means a lot to you...she needs to understand that.

I don't ever eat (or drink) in my MINI either.

 

you sold your cup holder! Mini didn't come with one so I had to buy one! And here's a hit, get whip with your coffee. Keeps the stuff from sloshing around and squirting out the sip hole on the cover!

For those of you with a "perfection" attitude about your mini, score the upholstery, and get one small dent. Then crumbs aren't that big a deal. It is just a car.

You know bluestone... you could take your wife out to your car, and hand her the vacuum. When my fiance drives my 330, I cringe. Not so much about food, because I can clean that easily enough. He also cuts corners too short. I am always screaming, my rims, my rims! We have different attitudes toward cars. I accept it. I regulate it! Subtle suggestions like,"honey, lets sit outside and drink/eat. It's such a nice day!!" over all, your wife will be around much longer than your car. Atleast she should be.

 

lol, I'm already envisioning the coffee spilled by my husband , the french fry under the seat (what is that smell?) and the gum wrappers on the floor . I will enjoy my car. I will take care of it. It will not own me. I will own it. Disclaimer: The first month is sure to have me exhibiting some obsessive behavior concerning it but I'm sure that will pass quickly. I'm sure I've just disappointed a huge portion of this board. Am I still allowed to post?

 

In my case, when my daughter was a toddler (before the MINI), she would toss unfinished fruit and some would roll under a front seat. We wouldn't discover it until fruit flies appeared.

bluestone, the two of you probably have different expectations of any car's cleanliness, and you should be resigned to be doing cleanup yourself to your own satisfaction. Now here's a question to ponder: who's fault is it if she doesn't understand how you want her to treat the car? The two of you have to discuss and come to an agreement of what to expect. If she doesn't share your obsessiveness, be prepared to compromise.

 

pottermom- that's the thing, i'm still in the first month. i'm not going to spend the time and effort and obsessive care to keep it perfect forever, but it's only been three weeks!

Well then I totally understand! I'm sure I'll be the same way the first month PLUS it had better be ME that takes the first plunge of devouring a hamburger at the Sonic, not someone else. Let the first crumbs and grease dropped be mine!

I hate it when Margaret insists on drinking coffee in GBMINI ... we compromise to where she'll drink some before we drive, so it's not too near the top, but even so with MINI suspension and Boston potholes, it's a worry

Heck, my wife was upset with me one morning at the park and went back to the car alone and threw the keys down on the dash when she got in, they bounced and ANYWHOO, it cracked the windshield on the inside, I still gave her the keys to drive it right after the new windshield was put in.

As you see I am with the "empty garage" guy above.

 

So... enquiring minds would like to know: just what IS your approach to apartment cleanliness and the maintenance thereof? Do you leave crumbs on the carpet, in the couch, on the stove, in the sink? Do you leave dirty dishes? Do you do anything -- anything at all -- that is not immediately related to keeping the apartment in pristine conditions and... could your wife be giving you a hint?

Even when my car was spankin' new I never got off on uber-cleanliness. I've always eaten (sometimes cheetos! ) in it and spilled stuff in it, etc. so I can't relate. But I CAN second Dr. O's suggestion to get whip on the coffee drinks. In my case, however, I always get a latte or cappucino for the same reason: the foam curbs sloshing.

 

...and people wonder why the divorce rate is so high...
