R50/53 My MCS and a Hummer
My MCS and a Hummer
Hi, all. Haven't posted in some time, but I couldn't let this little experience go by without comment.
Today, I parked at a local eatery right next to a yellow Hummer H-2--you know, the Chevy. Anyhoo, the Hummer owner was climbing into her behemoth as I was starting to walk toward the restaurant (Baja Fresh, it was) when I thought I heard her door make contact with my white side-view mirror. I went over to inspect it, finding that it was a false alarm, and there was no contact made. I quickly glanced at the Hummer driver and gave her the thumbs-up-it's-okay sign.
Then it gets a little weird.
She rolls down her window and says, "Did you think I just hit your car?"
"Yeah," I said. "But it looks like everything is okay. No worries."
Then she sanctimoniously says, "Honey, MY car is worth 4 times yours. Believe me, I have more respect than that!"
What? Is she saying that because she thinks her Chevy in funny sheetmetal is so expensive (somehow according her with extra-special social status), she wouldn't deign to profane it by making contact with a meer MINI Cooper?!
Also, what is she doing calling me "Honey"?! She was clearly 10 years younger than I! Sheesh!
Are all Hummer drivers like this?

Oh, not all are. I have many friends that are Hummer Drivers. Most are nice, but you'll find a few rude ones. I mean, an '03 H2 and a 2006 MCS are about the same price. You can get a used H2 for ~30k.
They really are worth that much anymore. lol
I have to say that you had a rare occation, because its not the car that makes a person rude, its the parents.

Right on qwermonkey. I'm sure there are people driving AMC Pacer's with the similar attitudes. They would just question why you thought your Mini was so special.
Jerks are just jerks, doesn't matter what they drive.

You find ignorant jerks everywhere regardless of what they drive. I don't know how many people that I have come across that think of MINIs as "econo-boxes". I usually try to educate them about the performance and safety aspects of the cat. That tends to shuts them up.

First.....Johnny, excellent vigilance on watching out for MINI dings. You have every right to protect your beloved car! (sad that most car owners simply don't seem to care).
Second.....very low class on the part of the Hummer owner. I assume they're not all like that.
Arrogance and elitism is unattractive...I don't care what car you drive.

My opinion - the Hummer, more than any other vehicle, attracts people of a certain mentality. There's nothing (that I'm aware of, at least) that an H2 or H3 can do that isn't outperformed by other vehicles that are less expensive.
The Hummer H2 & H3 are all about image & status, projecting the "I'm bigger than you" mentality. True, plenty of other SUVs are very capable of that too, but the Hummer takes it to a whole new level. I think it's the ultimate "compensation" vehicle (although the same could be said for a lot of Ferrari, Lamborghini & Porsche owners who never even bother to test its capabilities, but just drive it for show). So it is not surprising to me that the lady (although I think just "woman" would be a better word) had that attitude.
Yes, it's very true that jerks are jerks, regardless of what they drive... but I suspect the "jerk-to-normal-person" ratio is much higher with some vehicles (like the Hummer) than with others (including AMC Pacers).
