This is an '06 MCS. I removed the two torx screws, which released the downtube, but the cupholder appears to be glued or welded to the downtube. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious...

 

Cupholder is also held on by a piece of double sided tape. You should be able to get a piece of dental floss in between the two parts and cut the tape away. Or you could be a little more forceful and pry/yank it off of the downtube.

 

There are some small pieces of double stick tape that hold the cup holder in place. Just apply gentle constant force, pulling the bottom towards the passenger side and it will come free. Don't try to rush it.

My first mod. was the installation of a "Light-In-Sight", even before I left the dealership.

 

Think the dealer will take it off for me? With all the choices you can make when you order, it's hard to believe that this is standard and not a "delete" option.

Nope! It is a clear piece you put on your windshield on the driver's side so you can see stoplights.

Based on what my dealership is getting for installing my roof rack and what they wanted for an armrest installation, my guess is that something as sophisticated as a cup-holder-removal operation would cost $120.

If you've already removed the screws you might be able to talk them down to double digits.

Looks cool! - but of course, if you have an MCSC you can just put the top down...

 

Seems to me, what this gentleman needs, is a local MOD SQUAD. i.e. almost every club has two or three folks seasoned and comfortable in modifications. Not necc. a tough one, but I can see where a squeamish fella might be a bit apprehensive about yanking on a car part.

Ask around, find a guy you trust (or girl), buy him a beer.

 

The cupholder in our MINI was removed before we left the dealership the day we picked it up. I knew from the first test drive that "it's gotta go!". As has been said, it's just a bit of (pretty sticky) double sided foamy tape. Gentle pressure will peel it off of there.

BTW, anybody want to buy a brand new never used cupholder? haha j/k. Sort of.

Managed to get one in before it looked like I had taken a shower just by standing in the sun.

FYI to all in cupholder discussion . We have cupholders ready to ship out @www.MINIFINI.com. Same cupholder as supplied in all 04' Minis. Fits all 02-06,clamps on around downtube, no sticky tape reqd.

 

If I were to order an 06 MC tomorrow would this cup holder be forced upon me? Has anyone ever requested not to have it installed? If so, did you still request the part so that you could install later (yeah right...) I'd much rather have the part for me to install than have two holes in my downtube if I removed a pre-installed cupholder after-the-fact...

the cupholder mounts onto holes that are all ready in the downtubes. If you remove them your self you just put the screws back in. If you don't get the cup holder then the two screws will be there anyway

Looking at the web site and the ordering process at my local dealership, it appears the big cupholder is an option you can either order or not order. I ordered one since I like having my big insulated Starbucks sippy-cup and the cupholders near my knee are way too small for a proper cup.

All the spec cars at my dealership have cupholders in them, giving one the impression that it's a standard part of the car.

From my test drive, I determined:
(1) The holder has a good design and is well-positioned to serve the driver.
(2) It is slightly annoying for the right-seater since it partially blocks her view of the radio and A/C controls.

Big giant cup-holder came standard with our 2006 Cooper.

PPE likes it, so it stays, but I prefer the MINI-FINI version so much more that I actually have TWO installed in my 2003 MCS

 

Cupholder is functional, BUT the ugliest thing on that beautiful car

The cup holder comes standard, but just ask the dealer to take it off before you take delivery. I told them to remove mine before I even placed the order for the car. And, it was nicely sitting in the boot when I picked the car up.

 

I asked my dealer to remove it prior to delivery. He forgot. Good thing - it is the PERFECT size to hold my NUVI GPS in the upper ring!!!

I snake the cable up from behind, and I use the bottom of the cupholder as a convenient shelf. I hate it as a cup holder, but love it as a GPS mount!!
