Might be out of an '08 Cabrio which is still a supercharger. Good point though... make sure the motor is correct before you have the mechanic purchase the motor. Sure it would be the mechanics fault, but better not to have to deal with another issue due to their mistake.
So I just picked up #54 on Saturday for $2500. It has 160,000 miles, but only 62k since adding the JCW package. The #1 owner told me it needs a water pump and rear brakes, so I took it straight in for the repairs.
Fast forward to today and I get a call from my mechanic that the car needs a new motor.. It's been over heated too many times.
For $5,000 I get an 08 S motor w/ 40,000 miles and everything needed (thermo, water pump, radiator, etc....). They are also doing the rear brakes and some suspension work. Total this repair is going to be $6k.
My question for the forum......is this car worth the money, or should I sell as is or part it out?????? How does the new motor effect the collectibility of the car?

My assumption is that the '08 engine is from a convertible, which would be a Generation 1 supercharged, Chrysler-based engine. An '08 hardtop has a different engine that is turbocharged. Check to make sure this is the case.
Those of us on this thread greatly appreciate MINIs and the MC 40 in particular. If it were my decision, and I could have a 40,000 mile engine and only have $8,500 invested, I would be putting in the engine and taking it on the road for many miles of enjoyment.
I would not worry about the effect on collectibility. The car will still be equipped the same.
I have had another mechanic give me a second opinion on the problem. Unfortunately it has the same sad result.....needs a new motor. I guess their is a crack and the first two cylinders are full of water and rust. He said he could repair that for $2800, but we could face issues with the head and supercharger and be chasing our tails while emptying my account.
I would rather spend the $$$ for the new/used motor and be in a better place with less than 50K on the motor. So please advise if anyone knows where I can find one with the JCW package.
It also needs rear brakes, power steering lines and a/c repair. This is getting expensive!!

We have the factory JCW head here if you find in damaged or cannot find it used. Make sure its a full JCW Tuning kit engine. Should have the plaque on the valve cover numbered and the JCW intake and intercooler cover / JCW injectors ...etc.

UPDATE- A/C has been used sparingly and no longer gets cold.
I have taken the car to Edmond at MiniWorldInc in Los Angeles. Edmond is installing the used 06 JCW motor with <49K miles. He is checking everything (brakes, power steering lines, hoses, water pump, clutch, control arm bushings, ball joints, shocks, struts, mounts, radiator, a/c) while it is apart. I figured we could get a lot done while it is already dismantled. We are upgrading to the aluminum coolant expansion tank as well.
I hope to get it back this week. I will get it detailed and maybe have my new decals installed. Or should I have them made into magnets for part time use, although I worry about magnets scratching the paint....
I promise to get pictures up as soon as I get the car back.

...as time passes owners have removed or replaced items, or dealerships have modified the look of a car to make it more attractive for resale, but for the most part if your 2004 MC has the correct seats, chances are it started as a MC40.

I have my GB and my Magnetic 37's in great shape. My hood and side stickers all faded terribly.
I have 147k miles on it. Time for a new clutch and front control arm bushings. I'm saving up, looks like about $3000.

Looks like I may be ready to sell my MC40. As of now the car has only 32k miles on it and it has new everything. I figured I would let you guys know first.
Unfortunately, I'm having to sell my Mini for something my kid friendly. Would love it to go to a Mini enthusiast out there who could appreciate it. Its 789 and is in super nice shape with 90189 on the clock. Lots of extras and upgrades. All placards and other original equipment intact. I'll post a couple pictures. Its on craigslist in Greensboro NC for anyone interested.
Only 10,875 miles on this MC40 - and it is for sale at auction. Current bid, 2 days before close, is $25. Yes, it does have a bit of damage front and back, but a low mileage motor and spare parts would have me bidding on this car . . . if it were not on the opposite coast.
