Blue tape to protect front?? What is it??

Is that some special tape that I see people putting on their cars when they race and whatnot? I'm picking my MIni up from Albuquerque and the 8 hour drive will be awesome...but I don't want to get rock chips all over. Therefore I'd like to cover the front and mirros with that blue tape.

What exactly is it and where can I get it? Is it just painter's tape that can be picked up from Home Depot.

I know it'll look stupid, but I could careless!

i believe its low tact 3m painters tape used here. You can tell by the blue color

used mostly because its easy to take off and doesnt leave a glue residue on the car's finish.

I just drove 2600 miles from Chicago to Seattle over some of the nastiest gravel-infested roads of Wyoming and came off without a scratch

$6 for a roll of blue painter's tape at Lowes - you'll only need about 1/4 of it.

What a great idea! I love a nice "spirited" drive through the mountains occassionally but always seem to come back with a little chip or ding. Now I can tape up for the twisties and pull it off when I get home. There's the added bonus of not having to clean the bugs off either.

Dang! That's a great idea! Here in the Lowcountry, the insects at dusk are murder, sometimes hitting the car so often, you would swear that it was raining. If you drive for more that 15 minutes in a non-developed area, all of the front facing areas of the vehicle will be almost black from smashing bugs. I thinking of adding "Bug-Bane" after the name of my MINI.

Instead of tape, how about this? http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog....1090&SKU=20264

or this: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/shield.html

You would still need the painter's tape to mask off the headlights and such.

Ummm.... but, uh... you're going to drive it anyway, so...

I mean, the tape is one thing at the track, but f you're going to tape it up before you hit the highway... let's just say it's like putting old sheets over your sofa so you don't mess up the uphosltry (which you'll never see because it's covered by the old sheets).

Thanks for the pics, ideas, and reminders everybody. Definitely worthwhile for those who are picking up a new car and need to get it home before they 3M film the front!

Great ploy for theft deterrence - no one in their right mind would steal a car that is "advertising" (the tape) a "mechanical defect".

No residue. It is designed not to leave any residue.

For the cost of the spray and shipping, you could get at least 3 rolls of the painters tape.
