Road Trip!! motoring to Canada.

I'm planning a trip in mid to late July and right now I'm looking at someplace in Ontario as a final destination. I plan on zipping up the east coast from FL and swinging through Syracuse NY to pick up a friend, so that's my only required stop. Thinking of crossing around Niagara and checking the falls then heading a good ways north, but thats just a thought at this point.

So I'm looking for a vacation spot in Ontario with the prefered features below

-Some mountains for some good hikes, don't have to be huge, after growing up around the Adirondacks and then moving to the flat sand bar of FL any elevation change would be good at this point.
-Good fly-fishing waters would be nice.
-Looking for a cabin or cottage preferably, but I have tents and lots o camping equipment.
-Cost $100-150(US) a day per person or lower.
-Oh and there will be a canine joining our expedition, so pet friendly would be good.

So I'd love to hear any recommendations or places you've stayed. I especiallly want to get some insight from you canadian motorers that live in Ontario.

And of course if anyone wants to point out some good eats or roads to motor on along the way I would most certainly not object . Though my time will be some what limited so I have to keep my side motoring in check.

I vacation in Ontario often (live in Michigan) and might have some ideas for you. Is this a motoring trip, or do you plan to get there and stay in one spot? How much time do you have? Ontairo is a BIG (and beautiful) place!

Not too many mountains in Ontario, but if you like mountain biking, hiking etc Collingwood/wasaga beach area would fit the bill .About 1-1/2 hrs north of Toronto.Great beach area, lots of hotels, camping areas, provincial and private. If you are coming up we will give you a tour of area. Our Mini club has a yearly day in this area, usually 10-20 Minis.Good luck, any more info needed PM me.

If you have the time, you can swing north up 81 from Syracuse, go through the 1000 Islands and into Kingston, Ontario. then across to Toronto and back down to Niagara. Just an idear!

Just one more piece if you try this trip. Head north to Ottawa (nations capital) it's only an hour north of the border. You can visit the Gatineaus in nearby Quebec. We'll treat you right.
Then down south to the 1,000 islands etc.

Good luck and welcome to Ontario, Canada

What I am dreaming about in a future Canadian MINI trip is to have some installation work done on my MINI in Canada for systems not available in the US such as -
  • Rear back-up camera for display on NAV system screen
  • Heated windshield
  • Any others ????
Bill

ps - I grew up in Orangeville, Ontario (50 miles north of Toronto) and have very fond memories of the beaches of Georgian Bay - and vacationing on some of the amazing chains of lakes in Ontario. My all time-favorite trip was a drive to Cochrane, Ontario, followed by a one-day up and back train excursion trip to Moosonee on James Bay (decidedly in Northern Ontatio) - but that was a heck of a drive even from Toronto.

Check out Tobermory and the Bruce Peninsula at http://www.tobermory.org . The Bruce Trail is a beautiful hiking trail running along the top of the Niagara Escarpment and the edge of Georgian Bay. I have hiked it fom Owen Sound to Tobermory (the Tub) and highly recommend it. Once in the Tub you have the some of the best fresh-water diving in the world with many amazingly well-preserved wrecks due to the clear, cold water. There are many boat tours to some of the islands in the area as well as across Lake Huron to Manitoulin Island. Feel free to PM me if you want more info. Cheers!

You could always get adventurous and head up to Fort Severn or something like that.

Try Algonquin Provincial Park. I've been there several times and it's one of my favorite destinations in Canada! Lots of great trails, canoe routes, outfitters, and places to stay.

If you like camping, Canisbay Lake is my choice. Perhaps rent a canoe and set off with your pooch and go backcountry?.

Plus it's easy to get to - either from the east (NY/VT) or via Toronto.

Have a great trip

Don,

That is exactly what I was going to recommend if he has the time. One of my favorite little stretches of road is Little Current to Spanish, just north of Manitoulin Island.

Maybe we should make this a MichiganMINI club trip.

Absolutely!. We could cruise up the US side and come back down on the ChiChi-Maun to Tobermory. We have a family cottage on Johnson's Harbour (9 miles south of the Tub) with room for lotsa MINIs. We would need about 3 days to really enjoy it.
