R50/53 A problem most of you will NEVER have!!
Here's a problem thats driving me nuts, and yet most of you in the states will never have to deal with it...
My MCS's gas cap is damn near ready to fall off....And "Why?" you ask??
Well, here in Mexico there's no such thing as a self-serve pump..Just full serve. So EVERY TIME I fill up my tank, the gas station attendant tries to TWIST my gas cap open!!
I guess I can't blame them, it's designed to look like a classic twist-off cap!
Cool design, but I give it three more tankfuls before it ends up in someone's hand..

Gee that's incredible. I didn't know they had the internet in Mexico...
Why don't you stop before the pump and take it off first so the hombre won't rip it off for you.
You can probably get a new one if your car is under warranty.Just make up a stupid story like."This cheap gas cap is junk. If you don't fix it, I'm filing the lemon law. This thing is unsafe."
Oh, do they have the lemon law in Mexico yet?

>>Hang on a minute -- Your filler cap does not twist off? Is this a special cap, then? (Forced to admit that I haven't had my MINI long enough to refuel it yet
)
4 days and you're still on the first tank of gas? You've gotta drive more!

LOL! I have driven more this past week than the two weeks previous (I work at home and only ever go out to the store -- or to pick up my new car). We're driving the MINI to Delaware this weekend. It's a two and a half hour trip each way and I still don't think I'll need to refuel!

I have the same problem. Here in NJ people have no clue. I watch them every time in my side mirror, and every time they go to to twist. I think the fumes may be affecting their decisions.

Well, I doubt that unless you drive REAL slow. Let us know what your mpg is, but most Cooper drivers are reporting in the 30 mpg range... Have fun!

this is an "S" problem, the MINI has a body colored gas door
and on the "S" the gas door looks like a gas cap
at full service sations you should get out and pump it yourself, before they have a chance to screw up your car

Looking at your picture you do not have an 'S', the 'S's have a diferent gas cap cover to yours. Thats what he's talking about. not the actual twist off cap underneath!

Oho -- it's a faux filler, then? I haven't examinined the "S" too closely so I missed this detail. There's no reference to it in the Owner's Manual, either. It must be passed on by oral tradition, I'd guess.

I read somewhere that you can adapt the cooper S gas cap in a regular cooper, so it must be possible to do it otherwise: Get the regular cooper gas cap.
By the way yellocooper, did you know Minis in Mexico don´t have gas engines? they have little chihuahuas with sombreros and horongos running on hamster wheels.
And Minis in Mexico are required by law to always have the sunroof open so your big sombrero won´t get damaged while you are driving

Don't forget our cup holders are also a little bigger, allowing us to carry around a can of beans with us in case we get hungry while we're out motoring around the Hacienda, and instead of Lapis Blue leather, we get Rattlesnake skin upholstery to match our boots and belt buckle.

I thought I was alone!!! In Jersey you can't pump your own gas either, so all the attendants try to twist it off, one guy even compleately leaned his whole body into it to get it off, when I noticed I **politely** told him to pull. Now it's just a routine, I drive up, open the window, tell him how much gas, then tell him "pull". it seems to work. Though I don't know how to say "pull" in spanish, so I can't help you Calvin77.

LOL
Classic. And in Mexico, if you want to listen to music while you drive, you can't turn on a radio, because they don't have radio....you have to hire a Trio to sit in your backseat and seranade you.

A friend of mine has a 57 Chevy Nomad.Sweet car.One afternoon while out crusing,we needed to stop for fuel.As we pulled up to the pumps,he turned to me and said,"Let's see how long it takes him to find the tank."The filler is so neatly hidden behind the drivers side tail light / brake light. It took about ten minuets before the guy asked where it was. When my friend showed him,he could not believe that it was factory. He thought that it was some sort of custom trick.JJ
I live in New Jersey and I always get out and open the plastic gas door, remove the cap, and insert it into the holder. This is because after they first try and twist off the door (grrr!), they usually then proceed to twist off the cap and let it drop against the car and dangle on the cord.
It's easier for me just to get out and do it myself.

Yup, same problem here in Oregon. We can't pump our own gas.
But I've got it down to a science now. The window goes down and I say, "Fill it up it with super/premium, the chrome cap flips open and please put the gas cap in the holder, thanks!"
I soooooooooooooooo envy all your lucky bastards who don't have to go through this biweekly BS.
