R50/53 ACTUAL MINI Theft Rates - official results
ACTUAL MINI Theft Rates - official results
In case anyone cares, the official results for 2003 (last tabulated year) are here ... http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/staticfiles...lTheftData.pdf
The official number is 15 in the year. Now the question is ... how many of the 15 were stolen without the key and not towed

Let's put this in perspective before you all spend way too much energy protecting your cars. The 2003 data ranks MINI as 181st in rate per 1000 cars. 15/33255 = 0.4511/1000. That's pretty incredible. Of course there's more than 100,000 MINIs in the US now, so you can apply that rate to get 45 MINIs stolen in total. Not to deny that to the owners of those cars it was a terrible event, but statistically, we're talking a pretty sure bet you'll be parted from you MINI by accident, or sale, rather than theft!
Still, always good to take the keys with you...

maybe those cars had their tow hooks on?
j/k since people seem to believe that increases the chance of your car getting stolen.
I made sure to paint mine red so any and all potential thieves can spot it.

i know of a girl that was car jacked and robbed as she was getting in her car outside a local bar.
so that's 1 for atlanta.
from my scooter board:
i haven't been able to find out more info nor did the police report it ontheir website, like they do other instances of interest. they must have an ongoing investigation.

from my scooter board:
Our friend Soyia was car jacked Tuesday night behind Graveyard Tavern. Manyof you know her or met her at Graveyard following one of our first neighbor gatherings. She is okay and was not harmed.
She parked in the lot directly behind Graveyard and left with three of herfriends. They parked in the ACE Hardware parking lot. She said she got into her car and then a guy approached asking for money. He then put a gun to her neck and asked for the car.
Soyia drove a Mini Cooper car. They took everything, including her purse, CD's, clothes, iPod and other replaceable (but frustrating as hell to lose) items.
Soyia reported it to the folks in Graveyard and overheard them say something like, "that's the second time in two days."
Later, when talking to the police detective, Soyia confirmed that there was, indeed, an armed robbery the night before.

But your question is valid ... MINI must have those numbers but we will never know

8 cars out of 17,000 or about 0.45/1000 again.

Some high profile, supposedly secure, cars are stolen using the following technique: 1) Rip out the ignition lock. 2) remove the ECU and drop in a hacked one, 3) start the engine - the hacked ECU does not check the security key - and drive off.

Bastards. May someone rip out and drive off with the crooks' private parts.

Ok, I understand the keys in the house method, but how does the tow method work? I nearly always apply the parking brake, so the rear wheels won't turn all that easily and I usually park it in gear, so the front wheels won't roll easily--so they have to *drag* the car on to the tow truck? Nasty--bu then again stealing a car is pretty darn nasty, so WTF.
cheers,
cheers,
If they are good they have a flat bed attached to the back of a truck, the flatbed has a big ol' winch, they will back up right to your car and drag it right on the flatbed. Takes less than 5 minutes and your car will be gone, then they can take hours stripping it and then dump the shell in the desert...or take the whole car to mexico and sell it real cheap. You see that a lot with bikes, You could probably buy a newer gsxr 750 for like under $2k in mexico.. :P
Here is a theft recovery http://www.readytofix.com/Inventory/Mini_S_03_Theft.htm
Seems like they towed this one...Check out the bumper..

Interesting.
BTW, yes a thief can steal ANY car. Having once lived in Boston area when car theft was very hard they just pick that little itty bitty car up and drop it on a flatbed ... gone.
