Normal clutch noises...

2005 MCS 6-speed. When the clutch is out. pedal up. I hear alot of noise.. like throw-out bearing noises... Especially when the car is cold... When I disengage the clutch, the noise stops... now, it all sounds like normal noises... just louder than many others. Are you other manual owners hearing this...
When the car warms up... the noise quiets down alot.. but its still noticeable...
Thanks in advance..

There are SO many threads on this!! The '06 is the same as the '05. The service bulletin addressing the issue only covers up to early late '04 build dates. They replace the clutch and flywheel! (Sometimes with no change in the "problem"!!)

Most of us with this "rattle" don't worry about it. It is normal for this clutch/flywheel - just variable from car to car. Let the clutch pedal out SLOWLY - for me this completely eliminates the tapping.

It's the flywheel. MINIUSA is replacing those under warranty on a "customer complaint" basis only. Apparently, apart from the noise, this has no impact on the functionality of the clutch.

If you want to have your dealer replace the flywheel, its a 9 hour job, so plan to be out of a car for at least 2 days. Request a loaner in advance if your dealer provides them.

I am experiencing this same problem, however my service advisor said it could be the transmission---i have an 06 mcs. anyways--we dropped it off this morning and will be in denver until sunday evening--they put us in a mc loaner--he said if it is the transmission, we will be without our car for almost a week. :( if it is the transmission, that doesn't say too much about the testing process they do when the car arrives on the boat--my car only has 3k miles on it and i have had since december 28th

I think people are freaking out when they hear the noise. Again, this noise does not affect the functionality of your transmission in any way or shape possible. Trust me I have owned 2 MCS.

Why fix it if it ain't broken?

I second C4's comment: if it doesn't impact the functioning of the clutch (and there's no evidence it does) and even if it does, you have a 3 year warranty on the clutch, then don't worry about it. I am a born worrier, and my '05 MCS makes lots of noises with the clutch out at a light, but I *know* what it is, so it doesn't bother me (now it's the noises I don't know the cause of that really bug me!) If you are really paranoid, then talk to your service manager and ask him/her to put a note in your service file that you are experiencing a noise, symptoms, etc with your clutch now, so that if it ever becomes a warranty issue, you can refer back to these early signs of a problem (and that it had nothing to do with your twin-charge mod and hours of drag racing!)

cheers, phil

I agree with the comments from C4... However... I just want to be sure the noise is normal and not the signs of a bad throw-out bearing... It seems the noise is comon in other minis... So I will just mention it to mini service when I take it in for its 10K service..

My '05 has these same noises and I've - so far - been willing to just put up with it. I am beginning to wonder though how a potential buyer of my car might consider the situation. I can talk until I'm blue that its no biggie but he could just as easily walk and look for another MINI that doesn't make the noise.

Please read the many clutch noise threads. I'm beginning to believe that many, many, if not MOST of we MCS owners have what I'm going to name the "noisy clutch syndrome". I don't think its going to hurt the car. I barely notice it anymore, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let them tear apart my factory assembled drivetrain because some shops think its the flywheel, some think its the throwout bearing and some think its the entire transmission. I AM going to evaluate the situation as I near the end of my warranty and take action then. It would be different if it was a generally recognized recall. If things deteriorate, I will, of course, take action sooner. In the meantime, I'm not going to sweat the small stuff.

Finally...the voice of reason!!! Thank you!!
