R50/53 Speedo question
The guage check is what started this question that has become more and more interesting/annoying not knowing. They don't light up when I do the check so I can't see outright wha they are.
The bottom one is a light sensor for the brightness of the LCD displays (Speedo, Tach, Radio, and auto A/C if you have it.) To test, turn on lights, and then shine light at that dot. The LCDs should brighten. Hope this helps....

Does the features list ever stop? Every day I learn something new and very cool about the MINI!

Nope...my 2004 MC center speedo is different from the above center speedo post on: #4 #8 #13 #15 #11 and the #4 spot looks to be blank
and lower in that center speedo diagram, what is that smaller diameter indicator between #6 and #7 ?

It occurred to me to glance in the Owner's Manual, pages 16-22, to see if this would clarify which lamps are US, Canada, etc. spec, and their relative locations in and around the center speedo, remote speedo, tach, nav, and chrono package.
No such luck. Where and what lamps you get is dependent on:
1) Which options you have, ie. Chrono, NAV, Center Speedo, Remote tach, remote tach/speedo, etc.
2) Which country, ie. Australia, UK, Japan, Canada, Middle East, and US, (at the very minimum), Each of these have 3 different configurations of NAV, CHRONO, or NEITHER, plus differences in, MPH vs KPH, and whatnot.
3) What year your car is may also be a factor.
For my particular, USA spec 2005 MCS with DSC, no NAV, and no CHRONO, my remote tach goes (left to right):
HIGH BEAM, CRUISE CONTROL, SVC ENGINE, BRAKE, ABS, and L/R TURN.
My center speedo goes: ***BLANK***, SEAT BELT, BRAKE PADS, AIRBAG, TRUNK, FLAT TIRE, GAS CAP.
In the lower part of the speedo, I have BATTERY, OIL, ASC/DSC, and EML. My Speedo has MPH with KMPH smaller, below it.
Now if I had the chrono or nav, the double bubble on the steering wheel would have:
OIL, EML, ABS, HIGH BEAM, ***BLANK***, and BATTERY in the tach, and
LEFT TURN, CRUISE, SVC ENGINE, BRAKE, ABS, and RIGHT TURN, in the speedo, and
The chrono package would have (top to bottom): COOLANT TEMP, AIRBAG, SEATBELT, FLAT, BRAKEPADS, and TRUNK, with a separate GAS LOW lamp in the gas gauge.
If NAV, the lamps would illuminate in the top area (left to right):
BRAKE PADS, SEAT BELT, AIRBAG, COOLANT TEMP, TRUNK, FLAT, and GAS LOW.
Canada spec cars just show KMPH without placing MPH below it. (Same true for Japan, anyone?)
Australia spec cars have the tach in the center, and the speedo on the steering wheel.
