you always remember your first...

scratch.

this morning after I had returned from a quick trip in the snow I parked blue back in his little snow cocoon and my girlfriend came out to help shovel the snow in front of her car. well I got in her car to move it out and she was still shoveling. I was just rolling the window down to tell her to not shovel near my car and I hear 'omg honey'... sure enough she put a 2" long scratch in the bonnet with the snow shovel! it's down to the primer too. I'm still grieving, but I can't make it obvious because she already feels bad enough... but damn. ohh well, not much I can do and it is just a car... but I'm still pretty upset about it. if it was on the bumper I might just use it as a reason to go get a aero bumper... but it's on the bonnet next to the headlight. I guess I'll call the dealer next week and order touch-up paint, but this sucks :(

Awwww.....so sorry about the boo-boo. I'll bet your girlfriend feels terrible, too.

My first serious ding happened when Wanda was about 2 weeks old. In the beginning of my first big cross-country roadtrip, I was motoring from Ft. Collins, CO to Laramie, WY with YuccaPatrol in his Defender and me in Wanda. We made a fuel stop and when I opened the door, I hit a stupid little pipe/metal bar thingie near the fuel pump island that was not visible from inside my MINI. BAMMMMMM! I smacked it hard! It removed paint and DENTED her. I had it repaired at Long Beach MINI for about $85, including touch-up on some bonnet chips, too, and you cannot see it, at all.

thanks clo!

hopefully I will be able to touch it up just fine! another annoying fact is that I have a clearbra kit that is just waiting for warm weather to be put on... if it had been on I don't know if it would have even touched the paint... and now I can't put the clearbra on until the paint is fixed and cured. ahh well, there isn't much I can do right now so I'm going to just try and let my girlfriend know that it's ok. I just wish it was me that put the first scratch in!

Sorry to hear about your incident, it can be fixed. My first I was keyed down to the primer from gas cap to headlight, I have it 90% fixed just can bring myself to polish hard enough to smooth it out, best quote so far is $200 ranging up to $1500. It happens but it gets fixed, I'd write it off as growing pains for a car. I hope it gets fixed soon I know how sad you are but you'll feel better when it looks like new.

My first scratch was a biggie. I pulled out infront of a guy in a truck going about 50. He ripped the front bumper off and put a gash in the radiator. He also knocked the hood around a good bit too. Notice I said HE did everything. I think it should be his fault since he didn't stop for my ignorant *** since I didn't see him. LOL Live and learn i guess. Remember it's only paint and bodywork. A car can be replaced!

yikes! it definately could have been worse... I actually lowered my comprehensive deductible to $100 so if I need to I can claim it, but I'll just wait in case there are other problems down the road.

here is a picture of the scratch... what do you guys think?

Bummer.....sorry.... doesn't look too bad from the picture - a good body shop can fix it right up... I'm sure your girlfriend feels pretty bad...

PS - My first scratch happened when I had my Cabio less than 2 months - some nice sucker KEYED the entire drivers side - front to back - total bill - close to $3K....

I would get some factory touchup paint, use a tooth brush, do about
10-12 coats in thin layers, let it dry a week, and then wet sand it
using 2000grit, polish, and wax afterwards.

should be able to take it to where no one would recognize it unless
you pointed it out.

I'm probably going to go next weekend to pick up the touch-up paint, but do you guys think it would be better to just claim it? it will cost me $100 for the deductible, but I'm thinking if I took it to a body shop they would exceed that because of having to remove the headlight assembly and remove the hood from the car. what do you think?

My cousin is an ASE certified painter/auto body guy and I'm sure he could mask the problem pretty well... but if it's still obvious I'm going to want to get it sanded out and at least that section painted. I'm worried that if I put touch up paint on it and get unsatisfactory results I may not be able to file the claim.

When I first married my second wife, she ran into a telephone pole. She couldn't wait until they got it into the ground - she hit it in the middle of an intersection when it was still on the trailer. Even had a flag on it so she had something to aim for...

She was scared to tell me because she thought I would holler at her (like her first husband would). I asked if she did it on purpose. She said "no". I told her that if she didn't do it on purpose, then I couldn't get upset. After all, I'm not perfect. We just got the hood on her car fixed and nothing else was said.

(Well, that's a lie - I DO kid her about the flag on the pole sometimes - "something to aim for...)
