R50/53 Things You Didn't Know About Your MINI

C ya,
Dutch
Thanks for the feedback on the unlock & the BCM comments. I am pushing the unlock button. (I now think maybe only one long time, maybe not the three times you indicate. Time needed to hold the unlock depressed for a response?).
Found this out driving home from work today. Oddly, once I was on the highway, I didn't need my wipers at 55 mph! Even though it was raining, the water drops blew to the side like a huge fan was in front of it. Several times I turned the wipers on but that made visibility WORSE!
After about the fourth attempt, I kept them off. I guess the wind speed and the very steep angle of the car's windshield were in such perfect sync that the wind blowing on the glass was blasting the water drops aside better than the wipers could! Has anyone else had this happen to them? Also, this has made me wonder: are the headlight humps funneling the air directly onto the windshield? The water behaved like a massive fan was in front of the car. I really wished I had someone in the car with me so I could record this on tape and put up. It's really freaky weird once you see it.

Nice Info thanks to everyone, from another newbie. Does any one have a picture of a 2006 toolkit? I think mine might be missing something, it looks like a space in the very upper right where a socket or something might go is empty on mine, just wondering what am I missing.
this site http://bobodyne.com/web-docs/robots/...ire/index.html has one photo.
But is it the same as your's?
But is it the same as your's?
I would like to add some more detail.
The contents of a toolkit are very different per car. It depends on the original configuration of how that MINI was built.
So if ex-works, you don't have runflats, there will be a jack and an emergency repair flask and even a compressor.
If you have runflats, you probably won't have a jack and no compressor.
If you have R104 wheels you will have a small extra key to unlock the wheel centercaps. This might not be present in other toolkits.
the above picture is for a car that has a spare tire (quite rare), so a jack and some black unlock key is added.
Conclusion : if your car came stock with runflats, and aftermarket you installed some nonrunflat tyres, you might have a toolkit problem!

I have a spare and the part right above the screwdriver is missing. It is difficult to tell what that is from the photo, but that look very much like my kit from memory.
Update - Thanks Marcel for the link, after going to the enlargment I can clearly see there is nothing in that hole, so I guess I am OK. The car salesman who sold me the car just put on a new set of Bridgestone tires. I would have perfered Perelli's, or Falken's, but the price was right on the free ones, so I cannot complain too much.

I'm unsure , but this might be the part that is used for emergency closing of the roof, in case you have a sliding roof.

Where did you manage to come about those eye stickers? they are pretty nasty
If both seats are down it will fit on a diagonal and have the nose/tail of the board wrap the edge of the passenger seat. I did not see this at first because I tried to put it in from the hatch and it looks like it hangs out. but I later tried with the hatch closed and slid it in from the passenger side and was quite shocked that it fit.
beasleyboy, try using PPG's Aquapel (their version of RainX, it lasts longer, doesn't streak and doesn't chatter). The water behaves as if it's scared of the glass. Great stuff. I'll use RainX in a pinch, but the PPG stuff is fantastic.
In the area of things I didn't know, I didn't know you could put an exhaust pipe under the battery box to fab up a "straight back" and still have more-than-adequate ground clearance... using some heat shielding is recommended.
Sorry but that's a little "high school" for me; draws too much attention and invites the jackwagons to make their statement by doing exactly what you don't want them to do. Just park a little further away, or find a "one side good" spot next to a curb and park to the curb side.

...far away and you park across two spots and other nice cars will do the same...

C'mon
Like my schnauzer, the MINI turns 80% of ladies' eyes.

2. one movement instead of two.....duh
Ok, I've just read through this entire thread over the span of several evenings. Surprisingly, I believe I can add a previously unmentioned observation:
The 10mph auto door lock feature has been mentioned as well as the double pull on the interior door handle to unlock the doors. During my daily stop at the Post Office I did the double pull to unlock the drivers door, got out to check the mail box, and didn't lock the door. I came back out, got in and drove on home... and realized the door didn't auto lock and had stayed unlocked. A couple days later my wife was with me and when I stopped to let her out she did the double pull to open the door, when I drove away the door remained unlocked until I relocked using to toggle.
Perhaps it's not that big a deal, but it could leave those in urban areas less protected than they thought they were.

Also, it's a small detail, but the locks actually auto-lock at 12.5 MPH, or 20 kph.
I've noticed (and been amused by it) that the speed increment on the +/- keys for the cruise control is also in kph increments, and the cruise works down to 30 kph as long as you're in 3rd or higher gear. This amounts to about 19.75 MPH or so, and is a considerable improvement over the usual 25 MPH minimum on most cruise control setups, as it lets you crawl through neighborhoods in 3rd gear at a few MPH *under* the residential speed limit *and* keep your eyes on the road looking for little Johnny or Sally to dart out from behind that parked car and into the road instead of watching the speedometer to avoid a ticket....

awesome...
I didn't know the Key wave in front of the ignition, and if you hold it there long enough, it unlocks all the doors.
I still can't do the rear passenger seat thing with the parcel shelf, having a hard time picturing it/doing it?

A couple of months ago I was replacing the battery for the 2nd time in my 06 mcs. I have owned the car since it was new. I have 114k on the clock and it wasn't until the 2nd battery change that I discovered the styrafoam piece by the battery was more then a spacer as I had always thought it was. It was like Christmas in April!
I've just realized that my '05 Cabrio has follow me home lights.
The garage lights on the side I park don't come on with the garage door, so I park in a dark garage. If I pull back on my light stalk (activate brights) my lights came on without the key...I timed them...40 seconds before they turn back off.
Now I just flip the stalk before getting out of my car & have plenty of time to weave past the other car & make it to the house before Butters turns his lights off.
It took me over 100,000 miles before I knew about this.
