2007 turbo cooper tuned to out perform 2007 turbo s ? thoughts......

from what i have heard it sounds like there might be a 143 hp turbo cooper and a 170 hp turbo cooper s in 2007. my question is this. since you can mod a turbo engine very easily and get huge hp gains, what is would stop people from buying a turbo cooper and modding it to out perform a cooper s. since now it is almost impossible to get gains on the current cooper engine to match a cooper s engine thats not an option. but from what i understand the new engine will be the same for both in 2007, just one tuned to 170 hp and the other to 143. any thoughts.

We will have to see what the bottom end is going to be like on both. I am sure BMW has thought about this too. But for those who care waranty will be the first thing.

There has been NO confirmation of the Cooper turbo being made. All indications from Motoringfile.com indicate that the Cooper will be normally aspirated.

I don't claim to have any inside information, but I've read somewhere that the 2007 lineup consists of all three variants, a 115 hp NA base, a 143 hp turbo mid range, and the 170 hp turbo high end. My guess is that the base will be priced similarly to the current base, the mid range at about the current S, and the high end one will be somewhat higher.

that article was dated back in march 2005. since then there has been a rumored turbo 143 hp varient of that engine. just not 100% sure if its going in a MINI or not. might end up in a peugeot. if it does end up in a mini it will be in the cooper.

Maybe you didn't read it close enuff cause it says"

"Interestingly it would seem MINI has decided to use the naturally aspirated 115bhp version of the engine (equipped with BMW’s Valvetronic) for the Cooper despite the fact that there is a 140bhp turbo version that will be available and put in use by PSA."

Seems pretty clear to me.

But it has an aluminum block...

Keep in mind BMW/PSA is building this new 1.6L turbo motor off of a brand new all aluminum block which is unproven and untested...

Now it has been 'confirmed' that the JCW version will be making something around 220bhp and 200lb-ft so you can be sure the motor is strong enough to handle that for 100K miles... the question is how much more can you squeeze out of it reasonably?

The engine tuners I have talked to have all been much happier with the cast iron block of the current car for big power since it is so damn strong! The downside is the poor head design and SOHC.

IMHO I think the new engine will be good for about 275hp without much drama, but after that serious work will be needed.

Personally I'll be twin-charging my current 05 MCS once the warranty gives out

chow, that article is a year old. Sure it was pretty clear then...but as with many things in life, things change. I too have heard the rumors in the last couple of months that the cooper will have the 143hp version.

OK, that true. Lets try this article which is a week old (and I would tend to trust Gabe's contacts)

http://motoringfile.com/2006/01/25/n...cvt/#more-4611

"This has never been confirmed to my knowledge and thus never been posted on MF. I’ve heard that the next Cooper won’t have the 140bhp version of the Turbo and more recently that it will."

This article says yes (but not clear if for US market).

I would bet they dont know yet ... and motoringfile seems to be taking the high road waiting for real confirmation

As stated, what I heard was a rumor. No waiting for the high road for me

Just speaking from a marketing view, it would make no sense to put out a 170hp MCS and a 140hp MC. It would be much better to segment the market. I could be wrong and MINI could just mess up the marketing. Other companies have done it: VW 1.8T vs. VR6, Saturn Sky.
