I'm ready to get my MINI!!! I'm going to order unless I can find exactly what I want on the lot (I've come close but not perfect yet). Anyway, just want to get an idea as to what everyone else is doing in the purchase department....

1) is anyone paying only MSRP? (Will they laugh at me if I ask for it?)

2) what kind of dealer mark-up (above MSRP) are you seeing? (I've heard $1k-$3K here in NorCal)

3) I've seen many people on the forum order from dealers outside their home state...I'm in California and with our strict emissions laws, I'm wondering if anyone else in CA has purchased out of state? Are you saving any $$ or just paying it on import to the DMV?

I appreciate any advice/info anyone can give....thanks!

It's kind of far away for you, but Flow MINI in Winston-Salem, NC sells at MSRP, with no dealer markup at all, and no forced add-ons. I think their wait for ordering a MC is pretty reasonable, 3 months when I ordered in October, and about the same now. If you are looking for a MCS though they've been quoting waits up to 6-8 months. As far as living in CA, I know that others there have purchased out of state and I think that the consensus is that the MINI meets all emissions standards no matter where it is bought. Good luck finding what you want!!!

Some people have order from Mini of Murray in Salt Lake City. I understanf they are at MSRP and ALL Mini's meet CA emissions. Do not worry about emissions.

I paid MSRP in Seattle but had to wait until the cows came home to get my MINI (8 months).

You can email dealers and get a quote most are very helpful.

hey, our dealership out here in Colorado is selling all of their minis for MSRP. It is a pretty good deal. When I ordered mine I got it pretty much plain, because of all the extra weight and stuff to go wrong. For example the sunroof rattles and it is a 60 pounds, it also doesnt cover up all the way so the sun is always shining in. You get what you want and start motoring soon.

Hi dixiep,

Welcome to MCO

The two dealers in Ca that are known to sell strictly at MSRP are East Bay MINI in Pleasanton and Long Beach MINI. The problem is, as you could guess, their lists are longer, so you'll have to wait if you want to order your own. If you want a Cooper and not the S the wait will be significantly less. It's quite possible there are several Coopers on both lots right now so maybe call them and see if perhaps there's one that suits your tastes. I'd stray away from Concord MINI though as last I checked they charge $3000 over MSRP.

PS: I have heard of many people from Ca going out-of-state to buy and have had no registration or legal problems, so it definitely can be done without a hitch.

Greetings

I'm also in Northern CA (up by Eureka though) and just ordered my MCS four days ago.
From St Louis Mini in Missouri. I was on the waiting list at East Bay Mini in Pleasanton (since Thanksgiving) and at the time was told it was a 1 year wait. They do, however, charge MSRP and you get to order exactly what you want with no add-ons. I have been told that as of January '03, the MCS list is down to 6 months. Niello's mark-up is essentially $1000, including the mandatory "protection package" - they wax it once for you. And Niello will not take any orders - you reserve what they have ordered, then pick it up. Their web site (mini.niello.com) lists their inventory much better than most others, though, and is updated every day or so, and includes their take-it-or-leave-it price. Selection of MC is not bad right now, but they have not had any MCS available for the last few weeks.

Good luck - and remember, you can find any dealer's phone number (along with other useful info) in the "Dealer Rating System" section of this web site.

Phil

Hi DixieP,
That's a unique user name for someone in Cal. Are you from the South? I bought a Mini off the lot in TN. I had to invest 8 hours to do so however. Their markup was right on the $ with your quote of 1k-3k. My mini had been there longer than the others I guess, so they finally caved, OR they just manipulated the #'s so much I could not see the profit being placed elsewhere. When you drive one, it will be hard not to just "settle". Don't do that! Although I really enjoy my car, I do wish I had stayed the course and bought the color that I wanted (Pepper White). I'm told Road Show of Memphis sells a huge amount of Minis to out-of-state folks. Good luck!

Welcome Dixie!

1) As you can see, lots of people are paying "just" MSRP...SoCA seems to be one of the remaining stronghold of dealers who choose to rip off their customers with extra charges. The majority of other dealers are now selling at MSRP...and a few at less!

2) see above.

3) There are lots of threads on this on MCO. The MINI is sold "50 state" ready as far as emissions equip...so you can buy anywhere in the US and register in CA. Again, lots have done this and told their stories on MCO

Note that if you're willing to buy a pre-ordered lot car, you can sometimes find a car at LESS than MSRP. This is a new development over the past months and is quite related to the ever-slowing economy. The car you find may not be absolutely perfect in terms of your options (probable areas of compromise would be in color and/or leather-type options)...but if you factor in cost savings and immediate gratification, it may be worth it. See the thread on Did you pay less than MSRP?
