You sure you're not braking when you hear it? ABS makes a funky grinding noise.

drove home tonight when the snow just started to fall in jersey and experienced the same problem --- not sure what it is. had abs grind system when stopping, then when turning grinding problem as well when not applying the brake. same when in reverse. what is this? only happens in snow & i am familiar with abs kicking in & hearing the grinding noise... does the same apply when turning even though not applying brake??

I believe you are hearing the DSC operating. quite similar to ABS noise

It ought to be pretty obvious if it's the DSC...look for the yellow triangle light (at the bottom of the tach face) to be on. In my experience, the DSC light always comes on when the ABS works (i.e., the DSC and ABS work in conjunction). So, if you don't have the yellow light, and still hear the grinding, you probably have some other problem and it's NOT the ABS/DSC you're hearing.

Might it simply be all the snow filling the wheel wells ... I wonder how my wheels manage to turn at all sometimes after driving home in this latest snow storm.

i figured it was snow in wheel wells, but was worried it might be something different just because it is a new car & i worry about every little noise lucy makes!! i do have the dsc on my car, but as of yet i have NOT seen a flashing yellow triangle in any driving condition, so i'm going to right now assume it was this massive amount of snow in my wheel well and if the problem persists i'll take it to the dealer!

If that's what it is, imagine how much worse it would be if you had the 17" wheels

But hey, try to stay off the roads if you're running the performance tires in this snow. DSC, ABS, lucky jesus on the dashboard...nothing subverts the laws of physics; and with performance tires on a day like today you might as well have skis on the car. Be safe.

I am betting on the fact that your tires are spinning and locking up and your MINI is trying to protect you with DSC and ABS.....

also if you are driving in the snow you should see that DSC light flashing like crazy at leat in 1st and 2nd gear. I am surprised you have never seen it.
