Tire Protection Plan

Wondering if anyone went for this service plan? My dealer just called me offered me this two days before picking up my car... I'm having them fax over the actual policy.

The jist of the message was covers run flat tires for 5 years for I belive $399... Seems like a waste of money, since I've had similiar protection from tire stores at a much cheaper price.

Anyone have pro / con experiences?

Everyone here seems to be ditching the run flats for regular tires. For the $400.00 you could buy a second set of tires and have the run flats "just in case"

That is one option I was considering as well. My friend who has been working at various local and chain auto service stores had nothing good to say for them.

I've still got a set and just drove in my first snow storm last week. Needless to say, my snow tires should be here from tirerack.com on Wednesday.

I'll keep with the run-flats until the tread is gone (I must be driving like a grandpa, becuase I've already got 16,000 on them-- Rotated once at 5000) then I'll move to all season radials. I've got a non-S, so I have a spare tire...

Just wonder what they covered beyond the tire company's waranty? That sounds like another excuse to rip off.

Since I have already had two flats with runflats I did what someone recommended here and took out warranties on all four tires at Discount Tires. I think it was about $28 per tire. After the first flat I had to pay $325 for another runflat tire so I wanted warranties. They are for the life of the tires. I just hope that Discount does me right on this if I have to have another tire replaced. ski

That's kind of like pre-paying for two tires isn't it?

Guess it really depends on where you drive, and if you plan on getting all of your future tires at the dealer. In 16+ years of driving (gosh, I'm starting to feel a little bit old) I've had one traditional "blowout" at speed, and maybe 5 leaky tires that required a patch/plug, maybe one leaky tire that couldn't be saved. The blowout wasn't even my car. Patches/plugs generally cost less then $20.

I've even had to replace two rims because of potholes in that time, but each time the tire was still ok.

Now, obviously high performance tires, or runflats, may not be patchable. And I'm not about to get into a discussion about the safety of patching tires (I've never had any problems with them, but others have I'm sure).

Oh, is the 5 years only on the original set of tires? OR is that for any runflat tires you have (assuming from the dealer) that you use in those five years. With the Mich Pilot Sports I ran on my last car, I usually only made it about 2-2/12 years (45K miles maybe). What's the lifetime on the Runflats?

D&R tried to sell us one of these tire protection plans as well. This is something we 99% unlikely to buy. Now the Extended warenty on the MINI itself, we will probably purchase when we have 2 years or 24000 miles.

i never buy those plans, but if you're one of those that prefer to take the car to the dealer to have the tires replaced, it might not be a bad offer. kinda
expensive though.

Your dealer will offer all sorts of warranties - mine was up to about $7500. Reminded me of the Honda dealers that charged $1000 for an "enviromental protection package" that consisted of a $10 silicone wax job and a $4 can of Scotchguard.

My Autonation owned dealer's finance guy offered up a sheet of extras. If you took them all it was $4350 or so. It also had breakdowns by what it would add to the monthly payment if you financed. Like Nancy Reagan, I just said no.

ohhhmmm,

i can write the benefits of tire&wheel hazard all day long, but to each his own. Being in the business, my only suggestion is negotiate the price of the protection plan to $299.00, they will still make a little money, and your tires and wheels will be under warranty for 5 years, even the replacements.

my $0.02
