fiberglass pieces in exhaust ?!?

As i was cleaning my exhaust tips, I noticed a bunch of fiberglass (I think that's what it is anyway) strings at the very end of the pipes. Is this normal wear and tear, or a reason for concern?

Thanks,

- ®

Any chance it got on there while motoring or sitting idle? Maybe from a bag or something

I had fiberglass too in my stock exhaust. I found that an excuse to get the invidia exhaust.

hhhmmmm, it's definitely fiberglass from within. Car is brand new -- less than 5k on it. Is anyone else expereincing this on a new (05/06) MCS? At what point should I take it in?

Thanks,

Crank it up and blow it out

Sounds like a little packing from somewhere got loose. I would pay attention to is but not worry too much.

(Some) New mufflers are known to have fiberglass or steel wool like particles on the rear boot area.

I didn't notice much with my MINI when new but after adding the Miltek cat back MCS exhaust the steel wool particle effect was quite pronounced almost like glitter on my boot for a few months.

Recently I replaced just the resonator on the exhaust and the same thing happened again.

I wouldnt worry about it, it just means it will get louder.

Doesn't anyone remember Glass Packs?

The main reason mufflers get louder over time is the brittle fiberglass strands shatter into small pieces (from vibration) which don't absorb sound as well--and can sometimes escape past the baffles. Some designs do not use packing. Those do not get louder over time.

I asked the same question back in 03. I never had a problem with the exhaust so it has to be normal. This is what my tips looked like on my 03.

Only glasspacks from the 60s did that on Hemis.
