4 weeks old, 340 miles...one f'n key scratch
Got up this morning to go to the gym and on the way out I noticed the white line trailing across the driver's door and onto the rear quarter panel.
This is the second time I have had a car keyed and I will never understand what motivates someone to do this. The car was parked outside of our apartment for the last 3 days and was not parked in such a way to invoke ire. Furthermore my other car was parked right in front of it and it received no such scratch.
Not a good way to start a saturday morning.

I feel your pain, Lemur. Drove my car 3,000 miles home, through snow storms, etc and made it through without a mark.
First week I had it home and drove it to work - came out Friday afternoon to find a big star in the windshield, and rock dings on the bonnet and roof. Apparently someone decided to use it for target practice.
I don't understand their motivation
, but I would certainly be willing to perform an attitude adjustment on the perpetrator.
Best of luck getting it back to beautiful...

Man I hate people who do these things, I had it done twice and each time was a new car, my wife had it done once too on a brand new RX7, they had done the whole car, it needed a complete paint job.
My second time was on a rental, it was a brand new Taurus with a transit paper instead of a plate, I was at a mall in Seattle while on vacation, the car had 45 miles on it, it was it's first day out, I brought it back played stupid and never hear about it.
Sorry to hear about your Mini, man I sure hope I'll never get that on mine, a friend of mine thought he was smarter than those jerk and covered his new car, the first night, they kicked it and stepped on the hood and roof, when he took the cover off, he wonder why he covered it after looking at the damage, I don't think there was a square inch that was not caved in.

I forgot to mentionned, I touched up the scratch on my Jimmy, I filled it up with touch up paint, it took about 3 coats, then I wet sanded with 1500 grit to remove the excess on top of the good paint, then I finished it with wet 2000 grit that soaked for 24 hours and polished it, it was on a black truck and 8 years later, you still can't find the scratch.
Sorry you got keyed!
I've found that people who do this are jealous and envious. These are the same types who resent any form of other people's success. It's a small minority of society, but they're highly destructive.
Please post photos when you get it fixed - provide us all with some closure!

I wouldn't have been AS upset if it had been someone scraping the side with their car, something else that happens here more often than you can throw pasta at. My thought process is, "yes, let us get this fixed now because it hath pissed me off". We will think it through...
My 82 year old mother had it happen at her church of all places while in attending services. Now not many uninvited's travel that parking lot on Sunday mornings, so was it one of the "faithful"? A 2003 Passat, her other car had one too about the same location in the driver's door. Amazing!! :impatient
I fully understand your anger and sick at heart feeling, but, saw a new Cabrio in Spain this year where they had not been satisfied by just slicing the top to shreds, but also had scratched the windows on that poor, unfortunate MINI. I guess the point [no pun] of this is that there is always some other soul with even more bad fortune. It's all too true that people in towns with narrow streets seem to get their jollies by vandalizing new cars to make them "look like the others". In Madrid, the streets are full of these; perhaps that's why more and more car owners are going to the guarded, lighted underground parking venues.
I feel for you!!! So sorry to read this - you are the 3rd person this week to post having their car keyed!!! Dang - why don't all those jealous people go buy their own MINI!!! Mine was keyed also - had it for just over a month....they really did a super job too - front to back on the drivers side - insurance paid out $2500 because the entire bonnet, door, and back panel had to be repainted. Yikes!!
I hope you find a fantastic body shop where you are.....mine was superb - perfect fix. I hope the same for you my friend....
Donna
I had my passenger side window smashed the very first weekend I owned my new Mini. Nothing was taken, just had broken glass all inside the interior. It sucked.
I dont understand why people do that sort of thing. I can only hope that karma catches up with them in some unexpected, and dreadfull, way.

Posted this story in an unrelated (hockey) newsgroup and had someone respond with, "Well look what you bought...you should be glad they didn't sugar the gas tank". As if I deserve the ire of others because I have a new car? Jealousy only explains so much. At some point those people need to be put down like Old Yeller.
I seriously hate people.

"I will never understand what motivates someone to do this."
There are 3 things (when combined/or not) that motivate jackasses to do this.
1. Alcohol
2. Jealousy
3. Stupid, conceeded, arrogant kids, who are trying to impress their stupid, conceeded, arrogant freinds that they are some kind of bad-***-outlaws when in fact they are just stupid little asses.
Maybe I'm being bias when blaming the young ones, but I'm willing to bet my MCS that 90% of this crap is done by kids.

Feel for you Lemur.
We had a key scratch on our minivan 2 days after we got the quarter-panel and sliding door replaced and repainted in Italy. (but it's not a new car)
As far as the repair, I would clean it, fill it with touch up paint, and then wet sand like zrwon described it. If it needed paint after all, I 'd wait to have it done after shipping it back.
Those bastards will pay for it sooner or later!

coming from a young person... i am sad to say that i know kids my age that do crap like this (well one, and he keyed my car).....
i'm sad to hear about your poor car :( some people just have no respect for other peoples things. I hope the body shop does a great job (whenever you choose to get it done) and it NEVER happens again... (and if it does- find the person and stick your hockey buddies on them!!!)
good luck!

Well, I should get to vent a little today...
One of my Shipmates spent the weekend in Italian Jail. Seems that the Local Police caught him vandalizing cars Friday night. Now, he wasn't on the island I live on, but I know this guy personally so hopefully me screaming my head off about respecting other people's cars will sink in a little.
It still won't fix the scratch though. Oh well...its not the end of the world. Its still fast and fun to drive.
