I hope it hasn't changed much if at all in a 06.

Official Guide from MINI:
http://www.motoringfile.com/howto/Alarm.PDF

Unofficial (better if you ask me):
http://home.comcast.net/~sfconnell/mods/alarm/home.htm

Forgive me but don't you have to take it to a dealer and have it "Activated"?

MrsDiff and I are debating about going this route also!

Indeed you do DrDiff.... They do have to activate it... What I have read... Mini charges about 1/2 of labor for this...

To install it, Mini charges 2-3 hours of labor.... plus the parts... which is $785 here on Hawaii...per direct quote....

The install looks fairly simple and can be done in steps even, from the install pages.... looks like the biggest pain in the butt is the siren install and the longest part is the stalk install...

I can get the parts for about $320 shipped.. install them and have it activated.... for less than $400 total... Leaving $385 for other mods, like my tint...

I recently purchased my alarm from Mini of Honolulu for about $300.00 and installed it myself in about 1/2 hour. The instructions included with the alarm were very easy to understand and follow. I took my MCS to the dealer to program the remote(s) for a small fee of $55.00. Be careful to notify the service rep as to what you already have programmed in before you have the work done. My '05 had to go back a second time because all previous programming is deleted when you add other options.

Alarming

--I asked my SA about the alarm and he said that installing the alarm myself would void the warranty. I was really surprised by this and asked him why. He said that in the past people have really messed up their electrical systems with a bad alarm install. I'm not sure if I really buy that but I just thought I'd pass it on that Mini of Hawaii might void your warranty if you install the alarm yourself. Let me know what your SA says on the matter.

It really sucks that they're so greedy on the accessories. I mean $785 for an alarm? That is SO ridiculous! I mean it's like 3 parts and less than an hours work. Half the alarm components are already installed in the car.

It's like a catch 22. The car is loved and reverred for its upgradeability and parts availability but BMW/Mini will void your warranty if you so much as plug something in without a BMW technician to clear it.

The dealer told me the alarm will have a one year warranty as there is no warranty for labor. It does not affect the car warranty.

Be sure to check the contents of the alarm kit for the proper light stick. The first one I bought replaced the wiper stick rather than the headlight stick. They exchanged it at no charge but it was another trip across Honolulu traffic.

pyratio, your SA is full of ....

The OEM alarm is plug and play. I could understand if he's talking about an aftermarket alarm where you're splicing wires, but not the OEM.

Plug in the motion sensor
Plug in the alarm
Plug in the stalk
That's IT
There's nothing you CAN do to the alarm system/electrical system unless you short out the connectors with a paperclip or something.

status on this:

The alarm arrived this weekend from Mini of Peabody.... motion sensor, siren, stalk, factory install instructions...

Sunday I installed the:
-motion sensor...very easy...5 mins max
-siren...easy but kinda of a pain in the butt to get the bottom bolt in... just be patient... about 15 mins... that bottom bolt is full of hate...

had to buy torxdrivers today for the stalk....going to install the stalk later this week or at 6 am sat morning, as I have an appointment at 7:30am for activation...

The alarm (bottom bolt) is the toughest part.
The stalk is pretty easy.
Congrats on the self install!

Siren/Tilt Sensor were the hardest. The wiper stalk was easy, but time consuming, and the motion sensor took all of 30 seconds. It cost me $400ish for the rear fog, switch panel, alarm, stalk, and activation (alarm+rear fog = 1/2 hr min).

danger will robinson danger danger

--I totally agree with you Eric. I researched the install too and yeah it IS plug and play. This was my one major complaint to Mini of North America. That every SA and or dealer seems to have a different story on what is and what isn't warranty voiding. I mean my SA has been awesome on almost 99% of every other aspect on my Mini but mods seems to be beyond gray in MoH. More like gradient.

Hey Roehrigs1 how much was shipping form peabody? Is that where you bought from?

Pyratio... shipping was $25 UPS 2 day from Mini of Peabody to my door.... no hassle....all the correct parts and instructions for install...

Yes, I know..I could of got it local.. but it perturbs me that they didn't respond to my internet quote request...that and I read that someone had a wrong alarm stalk given to them and they had to go back to MoH...

I'd rather pay the $25 to have it to my door in 2 days.... with the right parts and oem install instructions...seeing I have to take it down there for the activation anyways...which kind of sucks in itself...

whats the main point of the stalk is it just the light for the alarm itself?

If so would it be possible to just use a small led light somewhere?
