R50/53 Question For Smokers With A MINI
I picked up my MINI on 1/31/03 and have been motoring around Chicago for the past 5 hours; however, I have yet to find the best way to smoke in the car. The windows when rolled down about 3 inches, leaves a gap in the front where I usually ash in other cars, but in the MINI it seems to be a bit of a reach to ash from that position, and it is close to the side mirrors. And then if I try to ash on the top part of the window, the space that is horizontal, it seems like the ashes would traverse to the back seat. Next I tried ashing from the sunroof when driving on a highway, it seems that the ashes would come back in, since the roof is open all the way. Next, I tried ashing using the ashtry inside the car, but again it seems to placed in not the most convenient place.
Long and short, I am wondering from you fellow smokers, what have you guys have found to be the best way to smoke in your car.
Let me know your thoughts. Please no suggestions to quit smoking.

I am a smoker, and the day I got my first BMW is the day I figured out a solution to your problem. I stopped smoking in the car  Now, four years later, I still smoke, but have completely ridded myself of the desire to smoke in the car. Since BMW, and now MINI, I have way too much respect and love for the cars to smoke in them

If you're at all concerned about resale value, learn not to smoke in your car. The used car market is bad as it is, no sense in putting your car at a disadvantage. As you know, a used ashtray does more to "odorize" your car than just about anything else...and "ashing" out the window is a fire hazzard unless you intend only to drive on paved urban streets.
Not trying to tell you not to smoke, but you sort of did ask for opinions (shrug).
Enjoy your new MINI, and welcome to MCO!

Let the guy smoke in his car!
I just flip pop it up over the midway point of the window. I haven't had any problems. A plus is that the back part of the window stays sealed.
You may want to experiment with opening the other window a bit to minimize the air pressure on your side.

A note from a motorcyclist motorer: Please be considerate and if you are smoking in your car, do NOT toss the buts out the window. First off, it creates offensive liter, second, you could hi me in theeye, or in my jacket. Hell, a lit cigarette exploding on your face shield is enough to cause an accident for a motorcyclist.
I'm not anti-smoker, just thought I'd take the opportunity to post that public awareness memmo.

Well, I'd suggest that you're best bet would be to crack the windows for ventilation and then use the ashbucket. That'll keep help with the smell, and also keep you from getting a ticket.... it will also keep you from cheesing off the guy behind you when your cigarette butt lands on his car.
Personally, smoking is rank, and I'd not allow it in my car at all.

Thanks for the feedback. I think after reading your feedback, I think me and my girl are going to reduce the amount of smoking in the car. I like the point about resale value and respecting your MINI. Thanks for the feedback. Its just I'm a bit rebellious, with all these anti-smoking campaigns going on, that i feel that us smokers are getting shafting with free choice issues, but that's another topic.

For being rebellious that is a huge step! I applaud your humbleness in openly admitting that you're considering that option at all!

I can't stand it when smokers in front of me on the road toss their butt out the window!!! If your're going to smoke in your car, keep it to yourself, and have respect for others around you. I don't need your ash all over my paint and getting in my radiator. How rude!
When I was a smoker and hated a smoky smelling car, I figured out a great solution. Carry an empty water bottle with a little bit of water still in it. Ash into there and make sure NEVER to use your ashtray.
It is the full ashtray sitting in there all the time that makes a car stink much more than the actual smoking of tobacco.
A little air freshener every once in a while and your nasty habit will nto leave your car to stinky!

And from someone who lives in a dry climate, ashes and tossed cigarettes have started several devastating wild fires in the west. Please keep the ashes and the butts inside.

When I smoked I found the solution that YuccaPatrol did! I used a soda can with about a half inch of water in it. It would fit easily in any small cup holder and I could put the ashes in it and put the butts in it too! Every day or so I'd throw the can away and put a new one in the car. My car never really smelled like smoke because there were no stale ashes sitting in the ashtray!
--- I do not like people who throw the butts out of their car! I always worry about it when I have my sunroof open and it can cause fires!
oh, and you will all hate me for this BUT. . . I went on a diet last year and I found that if I was eating and driving I would not pay attention to what I was eating. I'd still be hungry for lunch or dinner later so it was like I hadn't eaten! So I made my car a "No Eating Zone". It really helped me eat at meals and not snack between meals!

I hear ya on that! George (see photo) stepped on my Dr. Pepper from Popeye's. BAM! It exploded ALL over the inside of my MINI!

A car that's been smoked in for any length of time will show it, whether you use the ashtray or not. The plastic and glass will have a film accumulate on it. The plastic molding will yellow with time and look like garbage. And yes, it will smell bad. There's no getting around it. Using a can with water in it may help, but I'm not so sure. Try sniffing that can some time. It's awful
There's no getting around it; smoking is a disgusting habit. Even sitting at a red light behind someone smoking is close to unbearable.
