Who changes their own oil?

How easy is it?
Anything special worth noting?

Easy? yes for the minimally competent DIYer. You will need one special tool, a shallow 36mm socket.

Get some ramps, the aforementioned socket for your ratchet, superior synthetic oil and a filter from your dealer. Piece of cake.

it is very easy IMO. The only special tool you need is the 36mm socket for the oil filter.

See the following for pics and such

easy....

here is one of many how to's

http://www.tech-esq.com/MINI/MINIOilChange.htm

two pointers

1) the 36mm socket from Sears works for the oil filter head

2) the spring loaded filter housing can be a little tricky... just be patient.

Well in 40 years I've NEVER had anyone else change my oil. I like to do it, gives me a chance to look things over good while I'm at it. Nice to see that the MINI should be no big chore to do. Thanks for the great links.

No big chore, Crashton. You just have to hold your tongue right to get the oil filter back on without cross threading the #%&@# thing...

I use the same 1/2 inch drive 36mm socket from Sears and it works just fine. No need for the shallow one although it would be just a tad easier with it.

Unlike Global Imports in Atlanta, I am easily able to replace the o-rings on the canister without breaking it and causing an oil leak!

Yea, I've done mine 3 times now. Not very difficult. Just got a 36mm from Sears. In a few thousand miles I'll get my first free one!!

Yup me too! I haven't read all the links, so if this is already mentioned...sorry.

To help get the filter cover to thread on correctly, I "mount" the filter (just the filter) to the engine block to open up the hole. Then remove it and mount it to the post in the cannister. Make sure it's centered and then hand tighten the assembly, no problems. The socket doesn't come out until I've got it all the way snugged down.

If you feel around with your fingers you can tell if it's starting to cross thread before any damage has been done.

I do my own in between the free ones. It's easier if you buy a lift (see gallery) as it's much easier to get under the car

I guess since the dealer will do a few changes for free I might find myself at the dealer for those. All the others will be done by me.

Thanks for all the help/replies guys.
I change the oil myself on the boat, big block v8.
For the 1st oil change at 500mi for break in, is it ok to do myself too?
Sorry for all the questions... silly nubie.

Yep. Did the first one myself, but changed to Mobil 1.

And the only dumb question is the one not asked...
