Destroyed Antenna Base

Stupid ... Stupid ... Stupid!

Went through the car wash a few days and figured my little aftermarket stub will do okay. Not!!!!
The drying curtain at the end of the car wash somehow got tangled up on it and ripped the little stubby antenna right out. Now I have a gaping hole in the base and have a clear view of some of the electronics. I just got a voicemail back from Schomps Service guy, telling e that it will be around $ 425 to get it fixed ???? :impatient :impatient :impatient

I'm not exactly sure what he was quoting, as I did not get to speak directly to him, but this number just sounds insanely high, doesn't it? Does anyone know what's involved in changing the base and how much just that part is?

Thanks!

Sweet. Thanks.

Seems like all I actually need is the covering cap, as that includes the threads for the antenna itself. $4.73 vs. $425 .... much better

Brushless ones are fine, I use them. Some Mobil gas stations have them.

You could save a lot of money by just using duct tape to do the repair

The first week I had my car I had to duct tape over the antenna hole because there wasn't a retaining nut installed

So you wouldn't be the first.

Riddler, I did the exact same thing to my '05 MCS. Schomp did the repair work for me and they did need to order the base from "zee old country". As I recall the did the work for between $100 and $200 parts and labor.

Felix (et al) --

Is the antenna held in place by the plastic housing or by a retaining nut underneath. After looking at the schematic that CHOW linked to, it looks like the mast screws into the plastic cover, and then possibly into the nut, which I guess connects it to the circuit board.

When my stubby mast got ripped out though, I found it on the floor without a nut attached. however, when I looked into the gaping hole of my base yesterday, I could not see any kind of receptacle/nut in there. At the same time though, it did not appear as if something had been ripped out.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

- ®

yeah right.

I talked to him again and turns out it was around 60 - 70 bucks for parts (including the electronics that screw into the roof, and the rest was labor for taking down teh rear headliner and so forth. You really gotta wonder sometimes about those labor charges ...

Yeah, don't go thru automatic car washes. My car is only washed by hand, and only by my hand. **** retentive? Maybe, but the finish on my car still looks brand new!
