R50/53 What did you give up?
I gave up not having a car payment every month, once my 97 camaro convertable was paid off I bought my mini. I really needed to get rid of that thing anyways it was falling apart and is pretty hair raising driving through NE blizzards

My wife and I gave up a '93 Lebaron Convertible (her fun car), a '96 DOHC Neon (my race car and daily driver), and an '01 Neon ACR (our other race car) when we got the Mini Cooper. We also have an '05 Freestyle as a family vehicle, but we'll both be driving the MC daily (we work opposite shifts). The MC is much slower than the Neons, but handles great, and we'll be getting a new Mustang GT Convertible in another year or two.

BlueCanary,
I feel your pain, I gave up a Wrangler, a while back. Those things are SO MUCH FUN in the right hands. I've put mine in the ocean, rivers, woods, and even on a tank course on an army base where I got about a foot of air.
Can't wait to jump my MINI.

In a odd chain of events and coincidences:
-> = "Gave up for" traded/sold to purchase
1993 Wrangler S (4 cyl) -> 1997 Wrangler Sport (6 cyl)
1997 Wrangler Sport -> 1996 AM General Hummer
1996 AM General Hummer -> 2004 Jeep Rubicon
(got out of 4-wheeling)
2004 Jeep Rubicon -> 1974 Porsche 911 Targa
(Wife gets 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I get her 1996 Jeep GC as my "Daily Driver")
1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee -> 2003 MINI Cooper S (my new Daily Driver)
So in a round-about way, I gave up a number of vehicles to get my MINI (But I still have the 911)
No regrets - I do miss the Hummer and Rubicon a bit though, but I'm not really into 4x4 anymore.

You're kinda correct on the practicality idea.
I'm afraid I couldn't handle owning an exotic like the Elise. In order to truly afford something like it (and actually drive it like it was meant to be driven), you need to have a pretty good pile of cash laying around (which I don't). The first oil change was $350 for cryin' out loud!
I was also too obsessive about the car getting any blemishes (note my sig) - I got more gray hair evey time I took it out of the garage. It's a pathetic story, but I feel fortunate to have owned one even if only for a little while.
Take it from one who knows -- the MINI is just about as fun on the street as an Elise. MUCH more luxurious, too! :smile:

I gave up that feeling of dread every time I had to commute to work, which was replaced with a nice combination excitement tempered with the serenity-inducing vapors given off by the lightly-warmed leather seats.
I gave up the quiet child in the back seat who was replaced with the one who squeals when we careen around corners and says "hey, my mom drives a race car" to anyone he meets in parking lots.
I also gave up any hopes of having to drive carpool, for which I will be eternally grateful.

Kind of an interesting story. I had a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab when I lived in Texas (live in Texas, have to own a truck... So they say) and then I took the job in Germany. Well, knowing Germany I knew that a truck was a really bad idea. So, we sold it and brought the wifes 2004 Subaru Forrester XT over. I have been driving that for a year hoping to get a new car soon. Finally the day came when we decided that sharing a car was getting a little old. So off to the Mini dealer I went.
So I guess you could say I gave up a rather large truck for my Mini.... :smile:

I wouldn't say I gave up my 99 VW Jetta. I would say it gave up on me. That includes dishonest service and corporate, Volkswagan of America non-support.
First the little annoying stuff, and then, after only 50k mi, the really expensive, out-of-warranty repairs...don't get me started
