If you take a look at the last GoMini magazine, there's a pic at the back where a giant MINI Wings badge appears to have been sand-sculpted. The caption goes on to inform the reader that BMW actually took a polystyrene block and sand spray-glued onto it.
Perhaps this is something similar?
As to the lack of shadow on the little girl, her arm is high enough to be above the shadow line.

It would be cool if they made one with the door open. That would be quite a sand-engineering feet.
